Eric lived in a small house nestled in a circle of trees, on a street with houses just like his, on the West side of Haileyville. When I pulled up, it took mere seconds for him to step out of the house onto the porch. I parked my new car behind a beat-up Chevy Nova and got out with my backpack in tow. “Is this an okay place to park?”

“Yeah. My dad can park to the left if he gets home before you leave. My mom’s car is in the garage and you’re behind me, so….”

“Cool.” As I walked up the porch, I noticed wind chimes in all of the trees. “Great place. It’s so pretty and peaceful. Even though you’re in town it’s like you have your own little part of the forest here.”

“Come in.” Eric was looking a lot better today. The doctor had given him some medication and told him he was no longer contagious. He opened the screen door and motioned me inside. A small pit bull, tail wagging and tongue lolling out of its mouth, bounded to the door with a yip to greet me. “Annabelle, no.”

I giggled. “Your dog’s name is Annabelle?”

“It’s a long story. I thought we could just hang out here in the living room,” he said.

I looked around. It looked like a library had exploded in the room. There wasn’t a flat surface that wasn’t covered with paper or books. “Yikes.”

“Yeah, here.” He rushed in front of me, clearing some books and papers from one end of the couch. “You want something to drink?”

Then from the other side of the house. “Eric? Is your friend here?”

“Yes, mom. We’re going to be studying in the living room, okay?” He rolled his eyes.

I politely sat down and opened my backpack, taking out my laptop and notebook. He moved around the coffee table and sat at the other side of the couch. A mound of books and papers sat between us. I handed him my big notebook. “Classes are in order. The first four classes of the day are in this notebook.”

“Okay, cool.” He opened up to the first page, then started flipping through with a strange look on his face. “You date your notes?”

“Yeah. Don’t you?”

“Nope.” He found day two and began reading, jotting things down in his own notebook.

“Do you mind if I work on some assignments while you read over and copy notes?”

“That’s okay,” he said, giving me another odd smile. Then he buried himself in my notes and I began working on my history paper.

“Do you kids want something to drink? Eric? Do you need more tea?” I looked up to find Eric’s mother beaming at us. She was a short woman, a little on the overweight side, with dark brown hair and eyes. She didn’t look that old at all.

“Yeah, I need more tea,” he said, then looked at me. “Mom, this is Jessie.”

I went to stand up.

“Don’t stand up, dear. What can I get you to drink?”

Now, I had water in my backpack, but I didn’t want to be rude.
