Chapter Twenty

Danni followed Jace into the small house. “Is this yours?”

They’d taken Danni’s car and after leaving Jace’s place, they’d driven up into the countryside outside the city and stopped here, on a small property with a few trees and soft, green grass. A wooden swing on the porch swayed gently in the breeze. Danni admired the idyllic surroundings.

“No. It’s not. It’s Justin’s.” He walked in and threw his backpack onto the sofa and the car keys on the small dining table. “I’ll put your stuff in your room.” He headed into a door on the right.

Danni admired the pretty house. The kitchen was small but tidy. There was a couch and coffee table across from a small TV mounted on the wall. She could see another bedroom across from where Jace had disappeared and a bathroom in between.

Jace emerged from the room. “The place is clean and there are fresh sheets on the beds and fresh towels in the john. Don’t know about the food situation. We may have to run to the grocer down the road and pick up some stuff.”

“This was Justin’s? How come it doesn’t look like a man cave?”

“Justin’s home is…was…his man cave. This was his escape. He could come here and get away. Have the place to himself. Most of the time, though, after a ride, we’d come up here, drink a beer, and shoot the shit. He gave me a key. Told me to use it whenever I wanted.”

“This is really nice.” She ran her hand along the top of a dining chair. “Justin keeps surprising me.”

“Yeah, me, too,” said Jace. “Don’t know what will happen to it now that he’s…” he paused, “…gone. Guess that will be up to his family.”

She walked into the kitchen and looked out the window, seeing the neighbor’s porch and enjoying the view of the trees in the backyard. “Have you talked to them, since…”

“Briefly, at the hospital.” Jace pushed back his windswept hair. “His parents have never been big fans of me though. Back in school, they always thought I was responsible if Justin ever got into trouble. I told them what happened to Justin and I’m pretty sure they’re blaming me for this too. I’m wondering if they’ll even want me at the funeral.” He sat at the dining table.

Danni walked over. “You know what happened to Justin isn’t your fault, right?”

Jace studied the table. “I’m not too sure about that. If it hadn’t been for Justin’s connection to me, he’d be alive.”

Danni sat next to him. “You didn’t kill him. This man, this Rutger, he’s sick. If he hadn’t targeted you, he’d have targeted someone else, and he has targeted others. You’re not the only one. That’s not their fault any more than it is yours.”

“When you’re sitting in my shoes, it feels a lot different.”

Danni clenched her fingers together. “I have sat in your shoes. I know what feeling guilty is like. It takes time and therapy to work through it. It doesn’t happen overnight, but it will happen.
