Pam was gone when I got back home. I had kinda hoped I’d walk in to the fresh smell of salmon croquettes, homemade biscuits, and grits. Once again, my queen-size bed had no queen. Pam had put her dark lipstick on and kissed the mirror on the medicine cabinet as her good-bye.

Jackson and Robin were heavy on my mind. I didn’t take my clothes off, just crawled in bed and yanked the covers over my head. My sheets smelled like traces of Pam and winter-fresh Tide.

That was how I stayed until after two. I hadn’t slept that late in a long time. When you’re hunting for a job, you have to get up with the early risers and chase that worm. I made myself get up and read the classifieds, then read the front page, finally took my clothes off, brushed my teeth, and showered.

By then it was a little after 4 p.m. The day was almost gone.

I called Pam. Left her a short message.

As soon as darkness began to shadow the bad and smother the city, the skies became restless. That made me uneasy. I neatened up and put on my gray suit.

The weather changed from chilly to cold. Clouds had moved in a little at a time. Dissension was in the sky and the dry air was turning humid. If I were superstitious, I would’ve called it an omen.
