CHAPTER TWENTY

Jimmy Frazer carefully placed a mug of tea on the table next to Eve and quietly explained about the place he had brought her to. He was careful not to get too close to her, despite the fact that her wrists and ankles were firmly tied.

He backed away and sat down heavily on a chair a little distance away. He’s no fool, thought Eve. According to Jimmy, she was lying in a log cabin, one of four that Jimmy’s father had built on the shore of a small private fishing lake in the grounds of his home. The enterprise failed and the cabins had been left to rot. Jimmy had kept this one in reasonable condition and apparently stayed here regularly.

But why? What were his reasons for “saving” her? Above all, Eve needed to find a way of contacting Nikki. She would be distraught.

‘So, no one knows about this place,’ she said casually.

‘A few locals might remember it, and we’ve had the odd squatter, but no one bothers to come here.’

‘And your dad died, when?’

‘Way back. Not long after I came out of the services.’

‘Do you live here in the old family home?’

Jimmy narrowed his eyes. ‘No. It’s gone.’

Eve decided to take a different approach. ‘I’m not being nosey, Jimmy. It’s just that it’s been so long, I wondered what you’d been doing with yourself.’

Jimmy stared down at his hands, clasped together in his lap. ‘Let’s just say I never had the glorious career that you had.’ His voice became hard. ‘Not all of us came through the carrier incident as well as some.’

She would have to tread carefully. ‘I know I was one of the lucky ones, Jim, but you did survive too.’

‘You think so? You asked me where I live. Well, right here, or on the streets, or in alleyways, or in the woods, or someone’s derelict barn. I can’t sleep inside, not since I came back. I have to be out in the air.’

‘I’m so sorry, Jimmy. I never knew.’

‘Why should you? Even back then, you were never interested in me. No one was.’ His voice rose.

Eve didn’t like his tone. ‘That’s not true. I really liked you.’ She lowered her voice. ‘I always thought we were good friends. Weren’t we?’

‘Good friends? Not really. I knew you all just tolerated me.’ He paused. ‘Eve, you only ever had eyes for Frank Reid. And who could blame you? He was handsome, really brave and a very nice bloke.’

‘I did love Frank, that’s true.’

‘But you knew you couldn’t have him. So I waited. I hoped. But then you disappeared.’

Oh dear. Eve did not like this one bit. How long had Jimmy Frazer been waiting and watching her?

‘Frank’s dead, you know,’ she said quietly.

‘I know. There’s not much I don’t know about the old group. Like I know that Anne and Jenny are dead too.’

Now that was not common knowledge. Anne, maybe, but there was no way anyone, other than the police, her closest friends, and maybe a few Beech Lacey locals knew about Jenny.
