On Wednesday night, nine days after Melody's murder, Jenna and Yoshiko sat in The Cuckoo's Nest, having the hottest buffalo chicken wings in all of creation. Pierce sat across the table from them, eating a burger and drinking Corona beer, a taste for which he claimed he'd picked up on the West Coast.
"So the show is just canceled?" Jenna asked Yoshiko, somewhat stunned.
Yoshiko shrugged. "What can they do? Hunter quit. They could get someone else in the cast to fill in for Rolf. But Maria is too central a role. They could recast and postpone, but apparently everyone agreed that it was better to just scrap it and do something else than have someone have to fill in for Melody. After what happened."
That last bit hung in the air for a moment. Pierce took a long draught of his beer. He hadn't said much during dinner, but Jenna was just glad she'd been able to get him to come along.
"Hunh," Jenna grunted. "So he's really coming back?"
"Sometime next week, I guess," Yoshiko replied, obviously as surprised as Jenna was. "I only talked to him the one time, but he said he didn't want to spend the rest of his life half a year behind. I told him we'd get him, so I guess we'll hear from him when he's ready."
"He should take his time," Jenna said. "I know he doesn't want to lose a semester, but he shouldn't come back before he's ready."
Yoshiko was nodding in agreement when Pierce spoke up.
"What about you, Jenna?" he asked.
She looked at her brother, and for the first time in a long time, she saw softness in his eyes.
"I'm all right, I guess," she said.
"You're sure? You guys were tight. All I'm saying is, if you're having a hard time, you know your professors would give you incompletes and such. If you're finding it difficult to focus."
Jenna blinked. Stared at him a moment. "You and Dad are talking again, I take it," she said.
"Some things are more important than personal politics," Pierce told her. "You're sure you're all right?"
Jenna glanced over at Yoshiko, who was also looking at her with concern. She was grateful. Of course so much focus had been placed on Hunter, and both of them had their own pain to deal with, that she'd received little consideration. It would have been selfish of her to expect it. But she was glad of it now.
"I'm okay," she said. "I think I've actually been keeping my mind off it by studying instead. Haven't missed a class. I'm even going back to work on Friday."
Yoshiko frowned. "Jenna, do you think you should —"
