The downward spiral continued for the next year and a half. She went through all the friends that she had left, camping down in spare rooms or sofa surfing, until they got fed up with her drug use, or her inability to help herself get out of the deep hole she was in.

The job at the pub came to an end after the landlord's wife accused her of thieving from the till, which in actual fact, she never had. Everything was tallied up at the end of each shift, and she knew that all fingers would have pointed in her direction for any shortfall. Reputation and rumour, and all that.

When she had been kicked out of the homeless hostel over the missing wrap of heroin, which she had actually stolen from another addict, for safety reasons she teamed up with a wizened old street walker, who gave her a few pointers on staying alert when living on the streets, which shocked her into realising fully that’s exactly what she was doing now. Living on the streets.

Her new best friend let her share the room that she had taken over in a squat in a rundown part of Cardiff until she found a room of her own of course, and she would have to make herself scarce if she had to bring a punter back there for one reason or another. It was the same new best friend that gave her a crash course on how to turn a few tricks herself. Only for emergency cash flow reasons of course.

The following year or so had been a survival on the streets learning curve. She moved around from squat to squat. The occasional sleepless night under a bridge or shop doorway somewhere, if the current squat had been boarded up or burnt down in some cases. She was only twenty-six, and still very pretty, and that helped her on occasions, being let in a recently acquired squat, or a shared room here and there, and of course, scoring drugs in lieu of payment the following week.

Because she didn’t now have a permanent address, she couldn’t claim benefits of any description, so apart from charity handouts, she had to become deft at all kinds of thievery and selling on, and of course selling her body, in desperate times. She would kill herself before she would resort to begging in the streets.

It had now been three years since Byron had disappeared from her life. Depending on her mood, or the come down from whatever she had hit herself up with the day before, she thought that he might be still alive, but then the reality of the business circles he worked in, and the kind of power-hungry bully that she remembered he could be, the thought of being long dead became the more likely truth.

The one thing that never diminished within her was the hope that she would eventually find out who it was that had done this to her. She wanted to confront them and kill them.
