Chapter 6

Amy woke to find the bed empty beside her. Steve was working late again. He was a workaholic, one of many qualities they both shared. It had been a week since Stan came back. A week that had left her emotionally confused and full of self-hatred.

She loved her husband, she knew that. Jeff was her entire life. The time they spent together as a family was precious to her. Yet, the treacherous memories of her past with Stan kept creeping in.

He was larger than life. A storm that swept away anything that came in his way. She was always on her toes when she was with him. Cool, composed and calm, Steve was supposed to be better for her. They cared for each other deeply and yet, lately she felt herself imagining someone else’s lips when he kissed her.

Amy shook her head viciously at the troubling thoughts. She got up and put on a robe. She went outside to check on Jeff and was hardly surprised to find his bed empty. Jeff often sneaked into Julie’s room when he couldn’t sleep. Amy didn’t mind that except that the youngest Manvin had never warmed up to her.

No matter how nice she tried to be with Julie, the girl was always cold in response. Heaving a sigh, she made her way downstairs to Julie’s room. She’d just have to be quiet and take her son back into his room.

It was past midnight and downstairs, the mansion was eerily silent. She quickened her steps and turned in the direction of Julie’s room. Just as she was about to open the door, she heard a noise from the direction of the kitchen. Curiosity got the better of her.

Who is up this late? She wandered towards the kitchen, tightening her robe around her.

A broad back was hunched in front of the open fridge. Immediately, Amy came to a halt. Stan straightened up to look at her. His hair was rumpled and the front of his shirt was open, hinting at sculpted muscles. He had a carton of ice cream in one hand and a beer in another.

He raised an eyebrow at her as he took a seat at the kitchen counter, casually flicking open the ice cream carton. Amy was instantly transported back to when they were young. The dim lighting of the kitchen and his disheveled state almost made him look like his younger self. He wasn’t the man who dressed up every morning to handle his father’s business. No, in that moment he looked like the boy with floppy hair, bright eyes and a mischievous smirk. The boy who had showed her countless of dreams without ever promising her anything.

As he popped a spoonful of ice cream in his mouth, straight from the tub, he looked like the wild boy she had fallen madly in love with. Steve would never be caught like this. Eating ice cream past midnight without a care in the world.

Almost entranced, she walked forward and sat opposite him.
