CHAPTER SIXTEEN
SARDINIA
Signor Rossi sat under a red awning in the shade at the La Campagna restaurant on Piazza Eleonora. He ordered risotto ai frutti di mare, rice with seafood. He felt the need for comfort food. The waiter, a young sprightly fellow with a shaved head and yellow sunglasses, put the hot bowl of rice mixed with clams, shrimp, squid, and mussels on the table. Signor Rossi drank only sparkling water because he needed a very clear mind. He finished eating the risotto so quickly that by the time the waiter brought the breadbasket, his plate was empty. Usually at lunch, he could sit for two hours.
âSignore, whatâs the rush?â asked the surprised waiter, removing his dish.
âI have things to do in Cagliari,â he said.
âItâs not good for your digestion to eat in a hurry. Can I bring you a small grappa, so that you wonât get heartburn?â
âNo, no, thank you so much. Just a double espresso please.â
Signor Rossi rocked back and forth in anguish. He had been up all night debating whether he should go to the main police office in Cagliari to file a report about the baby. But what would he say? That he was suspicious about the circumstances of Mira? Show them the Danish newspaper cutting and tell them he believed this is the missing child? Explain how he found the newspaper clipping hidden in the fatherâs drawer? How could he convince them of his suspicions that this baby turned up out of the blue after the motherâs prior pregnancy ended with a stillborn birth? It sounded so far-fetched that the authorities would think that he was crazy.
He downed his espresso in one gulp, left the money on the table, and hurried off toward the train station.
The train ride to Cagliari was one hour. Signor Rossi tried to close his eyes and take a nap, but a mother and a little girl were sitting in the seats facing him and the girl didnât stop asking if they were there yet. Signor Rossi was becoming annoyed that he couldnât sleep. He opened one eye and glared at the mother.
She smiled at Signor Rossi. âPlease excuse my daughter. She is very excited to meet her father for the first time.â
Signor Rossi didnât feel like getting into a conversation, but the woman was very persistent.
She bent toward him and spoke softly so that her daughter, who was drawing pictures on the tray table, couldnât hear.
âI only just found out who the father of my child is,â she said. âThrough DNA. Itâs amazing how far medical science has come. He denied it for years, but he was court mandated to take the test. He now wants to meet her.â
âSo you think this is a good thing?â
âWell, yes, she is four years old. and this is a good time for her to get to know her father.â
âI wish you good luck and hopefully everything works out well for you and your daughter.â
âAre we there yet?â asked the girl.
âSoon,â replied her mother. She picked up the drawing her daughter made of a mother and a child.
