I sat inside my Tahoe parked outside the courthouse, golden rays of sunlight heating up its interior. Even at the end of November, the humid air didn’t show any signs of relenting. But while little droplets of sweat trailed down the back of my neck, I was still cold on the inside, and my head was numb from recalling every detail of the attack, with Seth’s face twisting more and more cruelly each time. Today, I would take the stand and share my story, praying it would shock the truth into those who needed to be woken up from the bullshit Hubert and his team had spewed.

Day after day, I’d entered the judicial battleground with both sides vying for position, where Judge Thompson hadn’t relented on sustaining all objections made against Harlow. I’d listened to each of Seth’s gang members regale the room with collaborative stories to back up Amber Wilson’s recount of that evening. Shit, I’d heard it so many times, I almost began to believe it, myself.

Then, Harlow had gone to bat, tearing their stories apart with his logic and with what little physical evidence he’d attained. Unfortunately, the clerk at Doc’s gas station had disappeared shortly after Chase’s murder, so in the end, it’d been a dead lead. Indeed, Seth had been clever enough to destroy any and all links that could send his crew away for life. The only real piece of evidence we had left to work with were tire tracks. Even then, though, it’d proven difficult, considering how common the brand was. Every trail we’d blazed, Hubert and his team had countered it, nudging the jury into believing the defendants had been framed, that anyone could have done this. Right, sure. Because Chase had so many enemies in town. All of his enemies sat in temporary jail cells, twisting the truth with the aid of one corrupt judge and a slimy legal team.

A sharp knock at the Tahoe’s window startled me, and I jumped at Harlow rapping his Stanford ring against the glass. I sucked in a deep breath, withdrew the keys from the ignition, and opened the door. A tornado of butterflies swirled in my belly as I stared at the double oak doors to the courtroom entrance.

“Are you sure you want to go through with this?” he asked.

Was I sure? Yes . . . and no. Though my nerves had gotten the better of me, my love for Chase and the need for truth and justice drove me onward toward the door. Harlow stepped quickly, matching pace with me. I’d nearly made it to the concrete steps, when he yanked me back, rounding on me. Dark circles under his grey eyes appeared deeper, and his normally well-groomed hair was slightly disheveled.

“Kira,” he said, “we have enough to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that they’d killed him, and had done what they did to you. You don’t have to do this. I want to you to think long and hard about this decision. Hubert won’t cut you any slack.
