Chapter Thirteen

Sara and Naomi had only been gone a few minutes. Jessie carried a tub of dirty dishes into the kitchen and returned with a rack of clean glasses as Batch came through the front door. The hood of his rain slicker was doing little to keep his face, beard and hair dry.

“Hey, Kid?” He dripped a wet path as he crossed the room to her. “Was there a dog in here? I saw one leaving.”

“Yep.” She heaved the rack onto the counter and began stacking the glasses in rows.

“How come?”

“Because I told Sara she could bring it. The dog doesn’t like thunder.” Jessie held a wineglass up to the light, examined the spots then set it aside to be rewashed.

“Was it that motor scooter blonde?”

“Her name is Sara Patterson and yes, she’s the one on the napkin. She was meeting someone here so I let her bring her dog. And before you ask, no, she isn’t buying my scooter.”

“Not in a million years, my ass,” he said with a hearty laugh, and headed for the office.

“I didn’t call her. She called me.”

“But you will. You will.” He closed the door. It opened again, a frown on his face. “Was that dog in here?” he shouted.

“Yes.”

“I stepped in the damn water bowl.” He mumbled something Jessie presumed was a long string of profanity and slammed the door. A moment later the door reopened. “Where’s the damn mop?”

“Storeroom.”

He retrieved the mop, still mumbling and grumbling. Once he cleaned the mess and made the rounds, greeting and joking with the customers, he stepped behind the bar. He dropped a couple ice cubes in a glass and filled it with iced tea. He added three spoonfuls of sugar but didn’t stir it.

“Any mail?” he asked.

Jessie handed him the stack from where she always kept it next to the cash register.

“You got something official looking.”

“Probably the tax bill.” He tucked the mail under his arm, grabbed a handful of popcorn from the machine and headed to the office.

Jessie knew it wasn’t a tax bill. It didn’t come from the tax collector’s office. It was from the health department. But she’d let him discover that for himself. If it was important, he’d let her know.

“Hi.” A woman in a tank top and blazer propped her arms on the bar and leaned forward, pushing her ample bosom together.

“Hey there.” Jessie looked up and smiled, then went back to muddling mint leaves for a mojito. Audrey was a regular. She was a beauty school instructor who loved to tinker with new products and styles. This week it was pink highlights and a row of piercings up the edge of one ear. She and Jessie had a short history together. A few dates. Nothing serious. An escape from boring solitude. She represented no demands. No jealousy. Dinner. A movie. Sex. All the banal characteristics of a noncommittal relationship. For both of them. A booty call, nothing more.

“I’ve been waiting all evening to visit with you. First it was that blonde, then the one with the big laugh.
