THIRTY-ONE

SASHA

Sasha pulled her curtains closed. No one could see her. She’d made sure of it when she sat in her flat with all the lights off. Too scared to even look out of the window, she’d remained huddled on the settee under a snuggle blanket since hurrying home. What must the staff at the supermarket think of her? She’d run out like a deranged thing, driving up a kerb as she skidded out of the car park. If they were going through what she was, they’d feel the same intense fear. She’d sprinted out of her car on returning home, almost tripping on the straps of her handbag as it dropped to the ground. She’d bashed into her downstairs neighbour and ran into her flat, sliding the chain across.

Sneaking into her dark kitchen, she felt safe with the window still boarded up. She knew she needed a cup of tea, or maybe something stronger. Something to take away the shake in her hands and the quiver in her breaths. Maybe she should go to her sister’s house. It would be safe there. No, she knew her sister would worry and then she’d tell their father and that would get him even more worried. She poured her tea and took a sip.

She pulled out her phone and called Trevor. ‘Hi.’

‘Sasha, I’ve made a few calls from London much to my sister’s anger while she’s trying to prepare for the wedding, but she’ll get over it.’ He let out a chuckle. ‘I’ve managed to find Kayleigh and her daughter a small temporary flatlet. It’s much more suitable for her needs. She moves in tomorrow. I have told her, and she’s thrilled to bits. Considering what happened in the room next to her, we put a priority on moving her.’

She held her hand to her chest. ‘That is the best news. She and her little girl shouldn’t have to stay there but I thought we had nothing else. How did you wangle that?’

‘I think I made about a million calls. Nearly lost my voice.’

‘Thank you so much, Trevor. That’s a weight off my mind. I just wish that I’d been there to see her face when she was told.’

He paused. ‘I did try to call you earlier, but your phone was off. Are you okay, by the way? I called the office which is when they said you weren’t in.’

The last thing she wanted to do was talk to Trevor about her episode in the shop or the youth that was giving her grief, or the writing on the wall at the old nursery. It was all getting too much. ‘I’m fine. I think I have a bug. My stomach is all over the place.’ That wasn’t a lie but it was more because of nerves than a bug.

‘There’s so much of it going around. I wish I could offer to cover for you, but uncle duties are calling. I’m currently wrapping up the bridesmaids’ gifts. I think I’d prefer to be at work.
