Your Stars Today: Problem-solving activities increase in intensity now. Success will depend on your power to supply ready answers when challenged and to effectively convince others to accept them.
Peter was convinced he was dreaming, so he disregarded the sounds of machinery and the voices shouting coarse commands in very bad German.
But being poked in the ribs with some kind of blunt object actually seemed real enough to hurt and, even in a dream, demanded some kind of response.
âVerpiss dich,â he said, and felt another jab.
âSchiesse!â A groggy Peter stuck his head out through the folds of the parachute, which he had wrapped himself in like a cocoon to keep warm. âVerpiss dich!â He opened his eyes and was immediately blinded by truck lights.
âWhatâs he saying, Sarge?â
ââPiss yourself awayâ. Best I can tell thatâs âfuck offâ in kraut.â
Christ, it really wasnât a dream! Those were soldiers surrounding him, the blunt object poking him was a rifle, and Sarge, the guy holding it, had an Australian accent. This was probably the Long Range Desert patrol that earlier had been shooting at the Axis aircraft.
âGâday, Fritz. How ya goinâ? Now that we done the formalities, lift your ass, you bloody fuckwit.â
âWait!â Peter raised his hands. Sarge grabbed them and yanked him up.
âSee, Fritz, this is what âlift your assâ means!â Sarge held Peter while one of the other soldiers slapped on a pair of handcuffs, then released him. âWe found your boxhead buddy a few miles back, all mashed up in glider wreckage. Left him for the jackals and Iâm thinking we should do the same with you.â
Not even a burial for Johnny. Damn, how did it come to this? âListen, you donât understand. Weâre on the same side. Iâm Peter Baker, a major in the British Army.â
âPretty good accent for a kraut, Sarge,â the soldier who handcuffed Peter remarked.
âThey teach their agents well, but heâs no fair-dinkum Brit. No, Iâll bet Fritz here and the other Herr Heine were preparing to pay Churchill a little surprise visit so they could chew the fat.â
Churchill? What the hell did Churchill have to do with anything? âIâm telling the truth. How can I convince you?â
âNot us,â Sarge said. âItâs the shiny arses at Field HQ you have to convince. Good on ya, Fritz. Youâll be getting where you were going anyway, courtesy of me and my Digger Darlanâs. What ya think, boysâwonât Winnie be goinâ all hooly dooley when Fritz here lobs in to yabber?â
Sargeâs question produced peals of laughter.
âEnough,â Sarge said. âTime we threw the cactus in the back of a truck and headed home.â
âCactus?â Peter said.
âOh, sorry, Fritz. I forgot for a moment that youâre a Brit so you wouldnât know strine lingo. Well, no problem. Translated into the Kingâs English, âyouâre cactusâ simply means âyouâre fucked.ââ

Under different circumstances, Peter might have enjoyed Burg al Arab, the Egyptian coastal village thirty miles southwest of Alexandria. With lush fig groves bordering on stretches of snow-white sand
