Instead of driving over to the Hammer Tyme, Tate drove to the coroner’s office. He was surprised to find Angela Davenport just getting out of a Toyota Forerunner a few cars away from him. He threw open the truck’s door and hurried after her.

“Dr. Davenport?”

She turned and gave him a cool appraisal. He took out his badge and showed it to her.

“Dr. Davenport, I’m Tate Mercer. I’m a consultant for the sheriff’s department and I was on scene yesterday morning when you were called out for the shooting at Bearpaw Creek.”

“I remember you, Mr. Mercer,” she said, pulling her briefcase in front of her. “How can I help you?”

“I was just wondering if I could get a copy of your report on the autopsy for the John Doe when you finish it.”

“You could have put in a call to my office, Mr. Mercer. You didn’t have come out here on your own.”

Tate shifted weight, studying the single story, grey building behind him. A sign stood under two redwood trees, proclaiming it the Tulare County Coroner’s office. “Actually, I wanted to talk to you in person. The John Doe, did you run his fingerprints through AFIS?”

“I did.”

“And did it ping on anything?”

She crossed her arms over her chest. She wore a suit in pale brown with a dark brown blouse beneath it. “I’m guessing you know it didn’t, am I right?”

“I suspected as much. The sheriff said the car was stolen.”

“Well, the body didn’t have any identification on it either. I’m at a dead end.”

Tate considered that. “I might be able to help.”

“And how is that?”

“I was a cop in LA.”

“I heard you mention that to Sheriff Wilson the other night.” She shifted weight, her gaze steady. This wasn’t a woman to mess with, Tate decided. He needed to just tell her what he knew. “You knew about the tattoo on the man’s chest,” she added.

“I did. I still have contacts in LA. There was one specific tattoo parlor that did those tattoos. If I can have a picture of the vic, I might be able to get an ID on him.”

She thought about that one for a moment, chewing on her inner lip. “If Wilson gives the okay, I’ll send you the report and the pictures I took.”

Tate nodded. “Thank you.”

“Mr. Mercer,” she said levelly, “it’s never good to get personally involved in an investigation.”

“I’m aware of that, Dr. Davenport.”

“Aware and believe it are two different things though.”

Tate didn’t answer. He wasn’t sure she expected one. He watched her walk away, headed for her office, then he turned for his truck, climbing inside. He understood that he shouldn’t get personally involved in this investigation, but they didn’t understand what the Devil’s Tongue could do to a town like Sequoia.
