CHAPTER 10 - THE STAND

The scratching in the roof had been persistent. It would be no more than a mouse, but that didn’t mean that its constant scurrying along the plasterboard or scratching at the timber was silent. With all his new abilities he found it amusing that he could still be irritated by the soft scrabbling above him. He also laughed to himself that he had no intention of pursuing that mouse either. How was he still afraid of something so small?

Ever since he had awoken from his near death sleep at his mother’s house he had found that he required no rest. He went to bed at night and closed his eyes and would drift off into a shallow slumber; but it was out of habit and never required for his recovery. Dennis had been one of those people in his youth who sought rest frequently to reenergise or recover from a hard day whilst preparing for the next.

No more.

As his body healed at an amazing rate he was never tired nor fatigued, and even if he pushed to some state of exhaustion within minutes he would be ready to commence again as if he had wasted no energy at all.

Dennis had tested his theories some nights before. It seemed unnatural and something that he would be recommending against in his classroom, but Dennis cut himself. He did it twice and was uneasy about it both times, he detested self-harm. In this instance though he was testing his body. In the first instance he gave himself a shallow cut with a knife; which still required a decent amount of even his current strength to pierce his skin. It had looked as if his arm had been pricked and torn by some barbed wire. Dennis had watched as his skin went to work and started repairing itself before his eyes. It looked like he had hit the rewind button as it stitched itself back together along the cut he had made. The second time Dennis had to look away. He found a fleshy part of his forearm where he was convinced that if he had done the wrong thing it wouldn’t result in him having a serious injury or bleed out. As his eyes had looked at the wall he had driven a blade with his quivering hand through his arm. It was the first time he had felt pain in weeks, and while he didn’t enjoy it there was relief that he could still feel that way. It had taken a small amount of extra time but the wound was closed in moments.

Dennis lay shirtless in the dark, thinking of many things; not one scar was exposed on his arm or his torso when there used to be so many. Dennis was not one to lay exposed or present with missing clothing on any occasion. He had looked once or twice at his newly profound physique but it made him feel awkward. In fact the only reason why he had no clothing on his top half was because of the clothing that Horatio had gathered for him.
