Chapter

Eighteen

By the time I made it back to the Hidden City, police helicopters with spotlights had been deployed, and the lights were beaming down, zipping back and forth over the busy streets, trying to find me.

My cheeks burned red with embarrassment. I might have gotten a little carried away while riding through the city.

I liked to go fast. I always had. Running was great. I ran damned fast, but whenever I could, I’d take a machine enhancement any day.

Motorcycles weren’t my first choice for speed, but they were the most attractive. There was just something about them, the gleam of metal, the roar of the engine, the smell of oil and leather, the way the machine vibrated between your legs as you opened the throttle and flew through the night, the world whizzing by, like you could fly…

When I was around ten years old, after living wild for years, I discovered a portal, threw myself through it, and found myself in a very strange civilization similar to earth. The intelligent species that inhabited the realm were humanoid—thin, with greenish skin, giant eyes and very long pointy ears. Later, I learned it was probably Svartalfheim, the realm of the dark elves. Or a similar realm, somewhere in that dimension.

To say they weren’t nice would be an understatement. I was quickly enslaved and sold into bondage to a high-born elf—a game-maker whose sole job was to provide entertainment for the royals. One of my first jobs was to muck out the erlyn stables.

Imagine a horse, but with two circles of rotating, unbreakable bone instead of legs. Imagine the wheels were organically rubberized to the point that if they hit a bump, they’d launch the erlyn fifty feet into the air. Now, imagine the erlyn could go two hundred miles per hour.

One day, on impulse, I got on one and went for a ride. Before I knew it, I was promoted to head rider and crowned with a royal garland of victory.

I still had to muck out the stables, though. Erlyn poop smelled like vinegar and wasabi shoved straight up your nose. I was glad when I found another portal and jumped through it.

I never lost my lust for speed. And luckily for me, my reflexes remained razor-sharp. Uncle Nate was uncomfortable with it, though, so I resisted the urge to beg for a motorcycle of my own when I came home.

I understood him. It was a miracle I’d made it home alive in the first place, and he’d only just gotten me back. And I definitely wasn’t bulletproof. On the contrary, I was soft and squashy, but I healed as quickly as a normal shifter.

Still, I had some old itches to work out and a good reason to take the Kawasaki on a wild goose chase through the city. After all, the coven could still be chasing me. By the time the news helicopters joined the police ones, all the searchlights forced me to hide out in an abandoned warehouse for an hour or so.
