CHAPTER 18
THE DRESS
âLydia⦠Lydia,â the angelic voice called. âWhere are you?â it asked sweetly.
âIâm right here,â I responded, looking around trying to find her.
âLydia, come to me my dearest,â she beckoned. âI canât seem to bring you to me, and I need you.â
âWhere are you? I canât see anything.â A brilliant white light burned bright in the distance, green at its center; green like Willâs eyes when he was angry.
âCome to the light. Come to me.â
I tried to walk towards the light, but couldnât. My legs felt like they were encased in cement.
âLydia, donât go. Stay with me here where I can keep you safe,â Will implored, but I couldnât see him either. The white light shone even brighter, eating the edges of the pitch black encasing me.
âSheâs not dangerous, she needs me!â I shouted towards Willâs voice.
âSheâs preventing you from remembering her vileness, playing tricks on your mind. Donât go to her.â Another womanâs voice, familiar and pleading.
A siren wailed in the distance, sounding off over and over again. I realized I was in a dream, but when I tried to open my eyes, they wouldnât budge. I could still hear the first womanâs voice clear as a bell, her fervency rising.
âLydia!â she wailed. âStay with me. Iâve been waiting a very long time. Come to me now, please! I need you.â At the same time, I could hear Willâs voice fading, beseeching me to stay with him. I was confused, both seemed to need me. I could only go in one direction. I fought against the pull of the light and commanded myself to turn towards the darkness in the direction of Willâs voice. I shouted, âWill!â and my eyes snapped open. I bolted up as my phoneâs blaring ring assaulted my ears and I answered with an exasperated, âHello?â
âLydia, thank God!â It was Will. âWhatâs going on? Are you alright?â
âYes, Iâm fine. It was just a bad dream. You sound all freaked out. Are you OK?â There was a long pause. âWill?â
âIâm here. I had a bad dream, too. I canât remember any details except you were in danger.â
Goosebumps ran down my arms. âDo you want to talk about it?â
âNo, Iâm just glad you are alright. Donât you have to get ready for work?â
âHoly crap-ola, I almost forgot! Talk later tonight?â
âOf course. Looking forward to it. Have a good day.â
âSee ya.â
