CHAPTER 18

THE DRESS

“Lydia… Lydia,” the angelic voice called. “Where are you?” it asked sweetly.

“I’m right here,” I responded, looking around trying to find her.

“Lydia, come to me my dearest,” she beckoned. “I can’t seem to bring you to me, and I need you.”

“Where are you? I can’t see anything.” A brilliant white light burned bright in the distance, green at its center; green like Will’s eyes when he was angry.

“Come to the light. Come to me.”

I tried to walk towards the light, but couldn’t. My legs felt like they were encased in cement.

“Lydia, don’t go. Stay with me here where I can keep you safe,” Will implored, but I couldn’t see him either. The white light shone even brighter, eating the edges of the pitch black encasing me.

“She’s not dangerous, she needs me!” I shouted towards Will’s voice.

“She’s preventing you from remembering her vileness, playing tricks on your mind. Don’t go to her.” Another woman’s voice, familiar and pleading.

A siren wailed in the distance, sounding off over and over again. I realized I was in a dream, but when I tried to open my eyes, they wouldn’t budge. I could still hear the first woman’s voice clear as a bell, her fervency rising.

“Lydia!” she wailed. “Stay with me. I’ve been waiting a very long time. Come to me now, please! I need you.” At the same time, I could hear Will’s voice fading, beseeching me to stay with him. I was confused, both seemed to need me. I could only go in one direction. I fought against the pull of the light and commanded myself to turn towards the darkness in the direction of Will’s voice. I shouted, “Will!” and my eyes snapped open. I bolted up as my phone’s blaring ring assaulted my ears and I answered with an exasperated, “Hello?”

“Lydia, thank God!” It was Will. “What’s going on? Are you alright?”

“Yes, I’m fine. It was just a bad dream. You sound all freaked out. Are you OK?” There was a long pause. “Will?”

“I’m here. I had a bad dream, too. I can’t remember any details except you were in danger.”

Goosebumps ran down my arms. “Do you want to talk about it?”

“No, I’m just glad you are alright. Don’t you have to get ready for work?”

“Holy crap-ola, I almost forgot! Talk later tonight?”

“Of course. Looking forward to it. Have a good day.”

“See ya.”
