KITCHEN CLEANUP

The key to avoiding critter confrontations is keeping a clean kitchen and storing food properly. Make sure any food spills get tidied up and that food scraps and leftovers are either stowed in the garbage bag or thoroughly burned in the fire. Wash dishes with biodegradable soap followed by a rinse, and clean prep surfaces.

Pack up all the food into tightly closed bags to keep down those critter-luring smells. Store food by hanging or in bear boxes in bear country (if those facilities are provided), or pack the groceries away securely in scent-proof containers at some distance from the tents. Cover gear with a tarp or store it under a rain fly.

Even if the weather is clear and beautiful and marauding creatures are not a concern, close up the stove, protect enough firewood to get a blaze started, stow the food, and clean up the kitchen. A messy, exposed kitchen is bad karma, sure to usher in rain and wind before dawn.

Finally, allow the fire to burn down to ashes that can be scattered in the water. When you douse the flames too early, burned wood gets preserved as resistant charcoal.
