Come all you weary factory girls,

Others would join in singing, and together we would walk out the door, stepping down the stairs as one family. Our great tide would flow across the grounds toward Consider, awaiting us on the canal bridge. We would stand behind her as she asked the overseers to see us not as workers, employees, and adversaries, but as daughters, sisters, and mothers, and to treat us with as much dignity and care as such kinship warranted.

And then it happened: the bell rang. A silence of held breaths followed. My voice broke through. A strange and lonely sound.
