Chapter Thirteen

Sylvia makes a beautiful bride. Her red hair is in an elaborate updo, with strings of perfect curls falling on her face. Her dress is elegant, with clean lines trimmed with lace. I think it fits her and her personality perfectly as I watch her walk down the aisle with a smile on her face.

I haven’t been able to look at Nick since we left the hotel.

My hand is on Issam's arm as Sylvia walks down the aisle. I squeeze him, and he smiles at me with glistening eyes.

The pianist stops playing, and Sylvia stands right in front of Nick.

I look at her face.

Her smile is so big. She is looking right at Nick, and she seems so, so happy. I feel a bit sick to my stomach.

Once the officiant starts speaking, Issam leans right into my ear and whispers as quietly as possible. “You okay, love?”

I nod.

“You look a bit green,” he says.

I look up at him. I can feel his breath on my skin.

“I’m not good at weddings,” I say. “They make me nervous.”

He smiles. “You’re okay,” he says. “I’ve got you.”

It’s about one o’clock in the afternoon when I get out of bed.

I have only slept on and off. Cumulatively, maybe I’ve slept four hours. I’m terrible without sleep. I drag myself into the shower and turn the tap on without realizing that I’m still wearing my clothes.

“Great,” I say. I start peeling off my clothes and let the water beat down on my face. I let the clothes fall into the tub and watch as they swell up, filling with water.

I wonder if Nick will ever call me again. I wonder if I have screwed things up forever.

I would not be surprised if that was the case.

I need to do something to fix it. But whenever I’ve tried to fix things, I’ve made them worse.

My phone rings. I practically hop out of the shower. It’s not Nick. It’s Myra.

Maybe she needs me to go in for the day. At least I would be able to take my mind off things. “Hello,” I say into the phone.

“Hey, Luke,” she says. “Can you come in today?”

“Yeah,” I say. “How many hours do you need me for?”

She’s quiet. “I was actually hoping for a meeting,” she says after a few moments. “I need to speak to you.”

“Uh,” I say. “Sure. Is everything okay?”

She sighs. “I need to speak to you, all right? When can I expect you?”

“I’m on my way,” I say.

“Are you okay? You look like shit.”

“Yes,” I say. “Thanks.”

We’re sitting in Myra’s office. She’s a beautiful girl with long black hair and dark skin. Her nails are painted black and white.

“How is Nick?”

I swallow. “What did you need me for?”

I can see Marc, Ryan, and Darren working outside the glass door. They’re laughing at something.

“You clocked out during your last shift without even asking Mackenzie if it was okay,” she says. “And you’ve been here a long time, I know.
