Chapter 21

THE MEETING WITH SARAH enraged him. He had been on the bench for a long time. In his court, he would’ve declared her in contempt. He would’ve easily given her thirty days and a fine for that level of disrespect.

How fucked you are—her last words to him.

He eyed the bottle of scotch, then went to the fridge for another water. After drinking half of it back, he opened Messenger on his phone and hit the call button for Melody.

It rang and rang until he disconnected the call.

“Where the fuck are my kids?” he mumbled to himself.

Someone knocked on the door.

“Enter,” he shouted.

Police Chief Warner stepped inside, waited for the door to close, then leaned against the wall.

“What’s up now? You look defeated. It doesn’t suit you.”

“You’re not going to believe this.”

“Lay it on me.” Griffin picked up a pen and idly tapped the tip on his desk calendar.

“Aaron Stevens got into a fight with four gang members in the large holding cell.”

“And? Is he in the infirmary? Please tell me they broke a few bones.”

Warner shook his head. “Other than one punch to the face, he hasn’t got a scratch on him. The other four guys didn’t fare so well.”

Griffin stopped tapping the pen. “What?”

“What, as in you didn’t hear me? Or what, as in, you can’t believe it?”

Griffin dropped the pen. “How is that possible? What kind of gang members were they? With a Teletubbies gang, or maybe a purple Barney club or something?”

“We might have underestimated Sarah’s group. We can’t find Parkman or Alex. They’ve gone to ground. And anything we throw at Aaron, it’s deflected.”

“Then throw more.”

Warner moved farther inside the office. “There’s only so much we can do without drawing attention to ourselves.”

Griffin lowered his head and rubbed his eyes. “You’re right. And if they’re going to be in the system for decades, we have plenty of time to ruin their lives.”

“Exactly.”

“Where are they now?”

“They’re in their own individual holding cells at the moment. On this floor.”

“Good. Leave them there until tomorrow. Oh, and Warner, I get their cases. They sit before me.”

“That’s not going to happen since it was you Sarah threatened.”

“Then charge them for the Nate murder and home invasion only. Leave my name out of it.”

“You’d be willing to forget what happened at the golf course?” Warner sounded surprised.

“Of course.” Griffin gave him a stern look. “Wouldn’t you if it meant I’m presiding over their case?”

Warner seemed to contemplate that a moment. “I suppose so.”

“Oh, come on. Don’t let your bruised ego get in the way of true justice. The years I can give him on murder is way better than what’s allowable by law for hurting your little wrist.”

Warner bristled at that comment. Color rose above his collar, and he crossed his arms.

“I’ll get it all done, but they will lawyer up soon. Their story will come out, and it’ll be substantiated by the others.”

“In my courtroom, what I say goes, and what I say is that Sarah’s lawyer didn’t instill any reasonable doubt.
