Thirty minutes later Moreno and Ryker were sitting side by side in front of a computer screen, watching as the leaked video footage of the fateful BBC Newsnight interview with Chima Muampa came to a violent end. For a few moments the two of them sat in silence. Ryker was horrified by what he’d seen, but he was also deep in thought about the content of the interview that had preceded the kidnapping.
‘Thoughts?’ Ryker asked.
‘Play it again,’ Moreno said.
‘Which part?’
‘All of it.’
Ryker sighed. He really didn’t want to. He clicked the button anyway.
Second time around the video was no less disturbing.
‘What do we know about where this came from?’ Moreno said when the video finished and Ryker closed his laptop lid. He definitely didn’t need a third viewing.
‘What sicko would leak that?’ Moreno asked. ‘And just post it for everyone to see?’
‘Perhaps a better question might be, why now?’
‘You think the timing is significant?’
‘It’s possible. The kidnapping was several days ago. Already people are beginning to move on, even some of Muampa’s most vehement supporters. We’re starting to see a lull in the protests and violence in Kilpassa.’
‘And now we’re gonna have to get ready to go through it all again.’
‘Probably.’
‘So it was Muampa’s people who leaked this? How would they even get hold of it?’
Ryker didn’t have answers to either of those questions, but something certainly didn’t smell right.
He opened the laptop again and went back to the video. He pulled the cursor across, taking the video back to the middle of the interview with Muampa. Something was bugging him.
‘The surveillance,’ Ryker said.
‘What?’
‘In the interview. Jenkins was questioning Muampa about what had taken place at his home. He had surveillance photos from drones.’
‘Yeah?’
‘So who got the photos? Who was feeding Jenkins and why?’
‘Could be ours?’
‘Could be. That’d make some sense given a BBC reporter had them. But if that’s the case why are we only just figuring it out for ourselves now?’
‘Because we’re lapdogs who don’t need to be told information that’s critical to our mission objective. Didn’t you get that memo?’
Ryker grunted in acknowledgment. ‘Yeah. I got that one more than once. Doesn’t mean I’ve ever liked to live by it.’
‘I’ve always liked a rebel.’
‘I’m sure you have.’ Ryker reached for his phone.
‘Time for the call?’ Moreno said.
‘Time indeed.’
