Kris

Something had changed about her. I noticed it as she climbed on the seat next to mine. Like a wildness in her eyes, a feral desire. And when we drove off, the street lights flickered on her face, from bright to dark and dark to bright, her determined expression raising her beauty to a whole new level. The wolf in me awoke my senses, and suddenly I wanted to touch her, draw her near and feel her skin on mine. To kiss her lips and neck and ...

"You know what I don’t understand?" she said and turned to me, our eyes locking. "Why me? What does he want from me?"

"Your soul," I said and pursed my lips, focusing back on the road ahead.

She scoffed. "Let’s assume such a ridiculous thing as a soul really exists, why would mine be so important to him?"

"We don’t know that. It’s not like he and I can sit down, have a beer and talk things through. For as long as we can remember, our kind has fought them, while they tried to drag one of you with them."

"And where would that be? Hell?"

"Sort of. It’s not really like you would imagine from the bible or the movies. At least I think it isn’t. We know it as Purgatory. It’s the place they reign over."

She crossed her arms over her chest. "That still doesn’t explain why they want to kill me."

I sighed. "They don’t really want to kill you. An old legend has it that vampires are actually demons from the underworld created by the first fallen angel. As life in Purgatory became lonely and boring, they complained to their makers and demanded some form of entertainment. So the fallen angels allowed them to enter our world and select one human soul to be stolen for their pleasure. The other angels, the good ones if you will, didn’t like the whole idea of demons running rampant on God’s children, and created our kind in return to defend the vampire’s objects of desires."

"So it’s all just random?"

"Seems so. It’s all a game for them. And we are the pawns." I showed her the mark on my hand and told her about the connection we had. Told her how one random werewolf got chosen to be her dedicated protector, leaving out the part where my soul gets dragged to Purgatory in case I fail.

"Do I have one of those too?" she asked, her eyes examining the intricate lines of the symbol.

"Yes, but you can’t see it."

I flinched when she touched my hand out of the blue and a stinging pain flared through my bones.

"Sorry."

"Don’t worry," I said and tried to smile. "It’s not as bad as when I first received it. It burned like an open flame."

"It’s so unfair." Anna shifted in her seat. "I want to fight back, Kris."

I chuckled involuntarily. "There’s nothing you can do to stop him."

"Why? I can very well plunge one of those sticks in his heart."

"He could break your arm with one finger.
