Chapter 27

All too quickly they were outside the Flaming Flamingo, a huge monolith of a bar on the main road leading from the harbour towards the town square. Clearly at the centre of the Andelica nightlife scene, teenagers and flyers littered the outside as they touted for business, trying to cajole holiday-makers inside rather than into any of the other bars and clubs on the strip. Curiously everyone seemed to part ways as Shelley and her group approached, led by the old lady in a Union Jack kaftan. As they arrived at the doorway, Nancy spun round and faced her entourage.

‘Team talk time, guys,’ she said. ‘Gather round.’

The rest of the Spice Girls shuffled to surround her.

‘Act natural. We go in there. Find our target. Gather the necessary information and then leave. Do you all understand?’

They all nodded.

Shelley felt sick. She could already feel this getting out of hand.

Rosalind put her hand up.

‘Yes, Rosalind,’ said Nancy.

‘Can I just clarify exactly what the necessary information is?’ she asked.

‘Whether or not Colin is acting in a dubious manner whilst here on holiday.’

‘And can I ask how we will determine this?’ asked Rosalind.

‘I think we’ll know,’ said Nancy, looking Shelley straight in the eye. ‘I think we’ll know.’

Shelley nodded. Christ, she hoped so.

‘Onward,’ Nancy cried, doing a three-point turn.

‘You can’t bring that in here,’ said a man in a suit, immediately stepping forward into Nancy’s path.

‘Really,’ said Nancy. ‘Watch me.’

She nudged her scooter forward, bumping into the man blocking her path.

‘Oi,’ he shouted at her, putting his hand in her face. ‘I said you can’t bring that in here.’

‘I think you’ll find,’ said Becca, stepping forward, ‘that you would be in breach of disability law to not let this lady enter the premises with her mobility aid.’

‘Says who?’ he asked angrily. ‘I’m going to have to ask you all to leave. You are causing an obstruction, wanting to bring a vehicle onto the premises, and you are too old,’ he said, glaring at Nancy.

Nancy gasped. ‘I have been made welcome in every establishment in this town until this one,’ she said.

‘Leave it with me,’ said Becca, placing a hand on her Spice sister’s shoulder. ‘Listen up,’ she said. ‘I’m a lawyer. In London. Dealing in licensing law,’ she blagged. ‘I’m guessing that you are probably breaching several codes of practice as we speak, from fire door regulations to maximum capacity allowances. Not to mention you are most definitely in breach of the disabilities act of 1984, which requires all establishments to meet minimum requirements on allowing safe access for those with disabilities. Those guilty of restricting access can be slapped with a minimum fine of twenty thousand euros. This is the Spanish law as regulated by the European Council. Now it would only take one phone call and …’

The suit sighed. ‘Come in, ladies,’ he said, stepping aside. ‘But you keep that thing on a low gear,’ he said to Nancy. ‘Understood? No driving into the other customers.’

‘This machine is totally under my control,’ said Nancy.
