* * *

We stand in front of the Omega Association building. The boring brick building holds my freedom and my future. Lucien holds my one hand and Cyrus the other one. I think they’re as nervous as I am, even though it’s my life this will influence the most. I let out a smile.

“Let’s do this.” I pull them along inside. I’m hoping this won’t take that long to go through, because this freedom also means safety from my parents. And the sooner I’m free from them the better.

Inside the building a young Omega is sitting behind a counter. He looks up at us. “Hi, what can I do for you?”

“I’ve been granted independence, but I still had to sign some things?” And suddenly I’m worried that this is all an elaborate prank and that my parents will suddenly show up and take me away.

“Your name?” He looks at the computer screen.

“Gail Frost.”

He types a couple of things. “Ah, yes. If you’ll wait a moment, there will be someone with you shortly.” Then he smiles broadly. “And congratulations.”

I nod, not sure how to reply, and a bit too glad that this is actually true. “Thanks.”

We take our places on some plastic chairs that line the hallway. The centre is not very pretty, but it definitely gets the job done, and it’s much more personal than the other place I went to.

“It’s gonna be okay.” Lucien squeezes my hand. “Don’t worry.”

“I know, I know.” I can’t sit still. I stand back up.

“Frost? Gail Frost?” The lady who phoned calls my name—Ruth.

I look up and Cyrus and Lucien are at my side immediately. “Yes?”

“Follow me.” Ruth disappears into a hallway and we follow her. She lets us into a small room. “Again, congratulations. It’s always great when things like this happen.”

“It’s not always granted?” I can’t help but frown, a bad feeling forming in my stomach.

“It usually is. But sometimes not before really bad things have already happened.” She looks me over. “You seem healthy and safe enough.”

I nod. Healthy and safe, it’s all relative.

“Okay, if you’d sit down, please.” She points to a set of chairs.

We all sit down, me in the middle and Cyrus and Lucien at my sides.

“So, here are the papers.” She spreads some in front of me. “I need your signature on a couple of them. After that I’ll make copies of them and they’ll also be sent off to your parents or guardians. Any questions?”

“Maybe a weird question, but will my address be on them?” I don’t want to ask it, but after last time… I’m not leaving anything to chance.

“No, just the address of this organisation, and if any contact is made we will get in touch with you. It’s not an unreasonable question, we get it often. Not all parents are willing to let their children go like this. Which is why we offer this help in the first place.” She gives me a pen. “If you’d like to read the documents first, or discuss it among yourselves, I can leave the room.
