"It's EATING HER UP, you know," Glen said quietly to Angie.

"What is?"

"The fact that she can’t coax her brother into offering me a job with the chain. Kim felt badly rejected two years ago when she found out her father had left everything to her brother. Now her brother won’t accept me and she sees that as another kind of rejection. Her mother and Helen and Derwin are

encouraging the idea."

"Do you want a job with the hotel chain?" Angie asked curiously.

"Hell, no. I wouldn’t work for Sutherland if he was the last guy on earth offering a pension plan and paid benefits." Glen grinned faintly. "But I’d give my right arm if he’d at least make the offer."

"For Kim’s sake?"

"You’ve got it. It would mean a great deal to her if her brother would bend far enough to offer me a position with the company. In her eyes it would mean he was at least accepting her choice of husband."

Glen shrugged. "Of course, that would leave me with a really big problem on my hands."

"Which is?"

"Not knowing what Kim would do if I turned Sutherland down. I’ve got a great offer up in Seattle. But I haven’t told her about it yet because I’m not certain how she’ll react."

"You’re afraid she won’t want to go with you to Seattle?" Angie asked gently.

"Yeah. That’s about the size of it. Celia has really been pushing the idea that I should be working for the family firm. And she doesn’t just want me to get any old job in the Sutherland chain. She wants Owen to make me a vice president or something equally impressive."

"She probably thinks that if her son-in-law had some status, she and the others would have some say in the business." Angie said thoughtfully. "Right now they’re all totally dependent on Owen’s goodwill and sense of responsibility, aren’t they?"

Glen chuckled. "I see you’ve got this crazy family figured out already."

Angie frowned. "Not completely, but I’m working on it. I’ve got one really big question I’d like answered."

"What’s that?"

"I’d like to know what happened thirty years ago to set off the original Sutherland-Townsend feud. No one seems to know all the facts."

Glen narrowed his eyes over the rim of his coffee cup. "More likely no one’s talking. This crowd can be real secretive. Especially Helen and Derwin."

"I’ve noticed." Angie started to say more but she was interrupted by the arrival of Derwin, who had wandered over to the sofa.

"You two look as though you’re enjoying yourselves," Derwin muttered darkly. His bushy brows were drawn together in a straight line. "Glad someone is."

"It is a bit grim around here, isn’t it?" Angie observed dryly. "Do you folks always have this much fun after dinner?"

"You think you’re very clever, don’t you, young lady?" Derwin scowled at her. "But you’re not half as smart as you think you are."

"I’ve suspected that, myself," Angie admitted. If she was all that bright, she would not be in this situation, she thought.

Derwin flushed a dull red. "Go ahead and laugh, but we know the truth.
