Chapter Twelve

Ramona woke up alone in the tent the next morning, wrapped up in a sheet and feeling overly warm now that the sun was streaming in through the open top. Stretching and groaning she gave herself a moment to wake up, remembering the night before and feeling her heart speed up a bit in her chest. She hadn’t done anything strictly wrong, but it still felt a bit like being caught. She’d never gone through a rebellious teenage phase, but she wondered idly if this is what that might have felt like.

Looking around she saw her glasses laying in the corner and she reached for them, sliding them onto her face. She found her shoes too and shoved her feet into them, starting to feel a little more awake and a little more human. She didn’t worry about brushing her mess of hair, she just pulled it back with the elastic around her wrist before climbing out of the tent. Most of the camp was already packed up by the time she emerged, yawning widely and sniffing the air.

Ramona laughed then and tried her best not to let that nagging shameful feeling take over, starting to take things out of the tent she’d shared with Jordan. She rolled up sleeping bags and pulled up stakes, taking out the poles and folding them up and laying them aside where they wouldn’t be broken. She let Eli and Jordan actually roll the tents up though, watching as they struggled to stuff them back into the bags they had come in. They finally managed it though, and everyone began the process of carrying things back to the Jeep.

It took time, but they finally got all the gear back to the vehicle and packed neatly inside. They hit the road much later than anticipated, but none of them seemed to particularly mind. They stopped for lunch at a little diner by the side of the road, stuffing themselves beyond all reason. It was a sleepy trip after that, all of them sort of quiet and contemplative. Ramona’s stomach gave a lurch when the Chicago skyline finally loomed back into view, and it wasn’t because of the cheeseburger she’d consumed either. She realized that she wasn’t
