They talked little on the way back down to Eadie's farmhouse, but May couldn't help the numerous glances she cast in Eadie's direction. Nor had she any interest in dampening the song her heart was singing. It didn't matter that the snow drenched her pants legs - she was wearing wool next to her skin and it kept her insulated and warm enough. It didn't matter either that she had absolutely no idea where they were, or in which direction civilisation lay. Lifting her head to the wind, she closed her eyes for a moment and felt the cold air on her skin, the whisper-rustling of the snow that drifted down like miniature ballerinas from the sky that lost itself as just another far horizon.
She walked behind Eadie, following in her footsteps, Tess the dog doing the same, occasionally breaking free to leap through the snow on inner-sprung legs, then falling back into their little file, tail swooshing with the great adventure of it all.
Eadie led them flawlessly, never hesitating over direction, and May kept step behind her, confident in her trust of the woman that they would come out exactly where they needed to.
Thinking about that, she smiled to herself.
'What are you smiling about?'
The voice startled her, and she lifted her head to see Eadie looking back at her, hat pushed back on her forehead, so that those blue eyes of hers were deep and wide, the colour of lake and sky and sapphire.
'What?' May asked, realising she'd missed the question, lost in Eadie's eyes. Her heart jumped around in her chest, lurching this way and that, off-kilter in the best way possible. She pressed her gloved hand to her breast, to calm the flock of birds beating their wings in there.
'I asked what you were smiling about,' Eadie said. 'I turned around, and you were grinning away!'
May's lips lifted in another smile. 'I was just thinking,' she said.
Eadie laughed. 'Must have been some good thoughts. I'll give you a penny for them when we're back and warm.' Her own grin was endearingly lopsided, and then she was turning back around and striding out into the snow once more. May gazed at her strong, broad back in admiration.
She'd no idea of how long it took before the farm house appeared in the distance, first as just another snowy mound on the horizon, then gaining definition as they came closer. She stepped up to walk next to Eadie as they crossed out of the hill line and down to recognisably farmed land again.
'Are these paddocks part of your farm?' May asked, rubbing her hands together and flexing her fingers.
Eadie shook her head. 'They used to be. Dad sold them off years ago.'
May swivelled her head, looking around. 'They don't seem to be being used.'
'They're not.' Eadie's reply was short. She sighed and went on to explain. 'They're too far from the main station to be used often. Mostly they just sit here going to seed.' May watched her narrow her eyes and stare across the snowy fence line.
