Chapter 2

“All right, Margo. Let’s try this again. Take a deep breath and hold it. When I tell you to push, we’ll have that little fellow born.” Cain loved this part at being a doctor, bringing new life into the world. Babies are what humanize us, he thought. Of course, he thought with a grin, they also make us worry warts. His personal cell phone vibrated in his pocket.

“I’m tired, Dr. Waite. Can’t you just make him hold off for an hour or so until I can take a nap? I’ll be better then.” Cain glanced up at Margo’s boyfriend when Margo whined again.

There was no way these two would last, he thought, and was glad they’d decided to give the baby up for adoption. Two sixteen-year-old kids had no right having children of their own. No matter what Cain thought of the ending process.

When his phone vibrated again, the reminder he’d missed a call, he was glad he’d tagged his message to call Alyssa, his wife, if there was an emergency. The only people who had this number were his sisters and their husbands and, of course, his wife.

“Come on, Margo. The sooner you listen and do what I need, the sooner we can get you to your nap. Come on now. Bear down like I told you.”

It took another hour for the baby to make his appearance. Margo and the boyfriend—Cain had no clue what his name was as the kid had never made it to any of the appointments—were settled in her room nearly an hour after that. Cain was exhausted himself and looking forward to going home to his new baby boy, Connor, and Alyssa. Then he wanted to crawl into bed and sleep for several days. He was surprised when he saw her sitting in the waiting room. Then concerned when he saw her face.

Something had happened, he was sure of it. He started toward her when he noticed Damon Grant and Drew, his brother-in-law, with her.

“Alyssa? What’s happened? Oh God, my mother again.” Cain hoped that was all it was, but somehow, knew it wasn’t.

“Cain, listen to me. Everyone is all right. Damon needs you to brief him on your patients that need you right now. Then we need to go to Nashville. Lilliane…there was a school shooting and she’s been shot.”

The room swam around him. Had it not been for Drew and Damon, he might well have fallen. Before he knew it, Cain was sitting in a plastic chair and his head was pushed between his knees.

“Stay with me, young man,” Damon growled from above him. “Your family needs you.”

Cain looked up at his wife who was kneeling in front of him. She smiled and Cain felt some of the weight lift off his chest.

“Lilliane is in surgery. She is expected to make a full recovery. She was shot four times. The bullet to her head was just a minor abrasion, but it still needed stitches, they said. Our plane is on the tarmac and your sisters have been picked up and are en route to there.
