‘Dad!’

‘What the…?’

‘Dad, you’ve got someone in there!’

‘It’s Kenneth.’ Dom’s voice was muffled by the sleeping bag.

‘You lying toad!’

‘Ribbit,’ a muffled female voice said.

‘That’s him… or her,’ Dom giggled.

‘Dad!’

Dom popped his head out from under the sleeping bag. His daughter, still in her dominatrix outfit but apparently minus the bra, stood at the foot of the mattress flanked by a grinning Lucifer and one of the Village People.

‘It’s not what it seems…’

‘Yes it is.’ Claire’s tousled head and one enormous breast appeared next to Dom.

‘Doris! Dad, not Doris!’

‘It’s Claire actually, Christine.’

‘Bloody hell, Dad, what about Mum?’

Dom lifted the edge of the sleeping bag and peered underneath. ‘Nope, she’s not in here,’ and with that he pulled down a giggling Claire and tugged the bedding over their heads. ‘Anyone for tennis?’

‘Christ, Gav, is that your idea of keeping a low profile? You’ve been all over the TV out here, you even made page three of El Mundo. The fucking world and his wife know who you are now… and what’s more, where you are.’

‘It had to be done,’ Gavin said simply, ‘and they haven’t found me yet. You just concentrate on sorting things out down there so I can come back with no problems.’

‘It’s not as simple as that, Gav.’

‘Yeah, well I gathered that. What’s the latest?’

‘We don’t really know, all our inside hotlines have gone cold, and that’s worrying.’

‘And Gomez?’

Jacko gave a snort of humourless laughter. ‘Well that’s the one bit of good news. We obviously weren’t the only ones he was trying to hang out to dry. Someone’s got to him.’

Gavin was silent for a moment. ‘That could make things a lot worse.’

‘Yeah, maybe in one way, but it buys us time. And we need to use it.’

‘Like?’

‘Consolidate, get out of the Costas, at least for the time being, sell everything we can and pull back to Gib and Morocco.’

Gavin clicked his tongue. ‘I never much liked the Marbella pad anyway,’ he mused, ‘see what we can get for it.’

‘Yeah, well, bit of a problem there. I was ahead of you on that but according to our new guy all the permits were dodgy, it should never have been built, probably un-saleable. In fact, we may actually have to pay to have it demolished and…’

‘Oh beautiful!’ Gavin gave a wry laugh. ‘Hoist by our own whatsit.’

‘Petard, yeah well…’

‘What about Puerto?’

‘Well it’s legal but the valuation was disappointing.’

‘Go on.’

Jacko told him the figure.

‘Bloody hell! Are they taking the piss?’

‘I’ll see what I can do,’ Jacko sighed.

‘And the finca? Go on, give me the worst.’

‘No big problem, paperwork’s OK and it’s gone up a bit. But I think we could hang on to that, if you wanted to… in fact, I’m there now.’

‘What’re you doing up there?’ Gavin snapped. ‘We need things to be happening down on the coast, Jacko.’

‘Gav, listen, it’s too hot down there, and I’m not talking about the bloody weather, OK?’

Gavin was silent for some moments. The phone murmured suspiciously. ‘Is Bobby with you?’

‘Yeah, she’s here, in fact she said if I got through she wanted a word.
