Thirty-Six

PAYTON

It wasn’t the most productive hour and a half I’d ever worked, but it wasn’t half bad. I was still distracted, still coffee-deprived. Still wondering how Gabriel would ‘take care of me’, other than in the more obvious sense.

Still, I got stuff done. I wrapped up one project ahead of schedule, and met the deadline on another. It had been a long day. I was looking forward to hitting the power button on my computer, and watching the monitor finally go dark.

Exactly ninety minutes after Gabriel and I got back, my phone buzzed. A message flashed on-screen; two simple words that I was getting more and more familiar with these days:

COMING UP.

I dimmed the lights a little and straightened myself up. I wasn’t out to impress anybody, but I still looked entirely presentable. Besides, I thought, Gabriel and I were casual. T-shirts and pajama bottoms. Bare feet and wine glasses and distant sirens…

The inevitable footfalls came, and they were heavy. Slow too. Almost like—

KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK.

Three quick knocks, instead of Jackson’s two. At least I could identify them.

“Hey…” I said, opening the door with a shy smile. “Talk about being punctua—”

My sentence trailed off as my eyes fell on something big and obtrusive. Gabriel pushed past me, dragging the monstrosity into my apartment.

“What the heck is that?”

“This,” he said, grunting as he hefted it into the living room. “Is my massage table.”

He flipped it open in a smooth movement and began fiddling with something underneath. By the time he was done there was a commercial-sized massage table standing in my living room, on four sturdy legs.

“And why in the world do you have a massage table?” I asked.

“That’s easy,” he chuckled. “I used to be a masseuse.”

“You did?”

“For a while, yeah. Made some good money.”

Gabriel’s smile was bright and beautiful, his eyes gleaming even in the dim light. He pulled something from a bag he’d brought with him — a wireless speaker — and set it down on my desk, not far away.

“The lights are still too bright,” he told me. “Go dim them some more.”

I obeyed mechanically, not even sure what to say. Then again, when a seriously hot guy shows up with a commercial massage table after a long day, what else are you supposed to do?

“Ah,” he said, glancing up at my high-hats. “There we go.”

I looked back again, and he’d already begun spreading soft towels over the surface of the table. By the time he pulled something else from his bag, I realized exactly what I was in for.

“Go on. Get undressed,” Gabriel ordered, screwing the cap off a bottle of scented oil.

“What?”

He laughed. “Well I’m not going to massage you with your clothes on.”

I hesitated for a moment, flushing a deep red in the half-light.

“Don’t I like get a towel or something?”

Our eyes met, and Gabriel’s perfect blue irises penetrated mine. “We’re a little past towels, you and me. Don’t you think?”

My gaze dropped and I watched, trance-like, as the gorgeous blond from apartment three spilled oil into his palm and began rubbing his hands together.
