Sleepers of Stage Two

Agent Bodzinski swings open the Second Generation’s hallway door. He expects the weary teenagers to have sorrowful expressions, yet as he flicks on the bright light of the hallway, he gasps. He gazes around to see all, except Ramsey and Surge, asleep.

“What the heck?” His heart doubles in speed as he begins to panic.

They can’t be sleeping. The chips would not let them! How? His fluttering mind whirls.

“Wake up, you stupid variables!” he roars.

They all peer up from fitful sleeps and deep slumbers that held no nightmares. He gawks at Surge and Ramsey, whose shadowy faces appear purple and blue with fatigue.

“How did they fall asleep?” he snaps at Surge.

He shrugs his shoulders. “I don’t know. I still hear ringing. I guess they—”

“Found rest in Christ,” cuts in Abednego. “You know, Agent Bodzinski, I really don’t think you realize just how much we’re not born to be weapons.”

Bodzinski swerves around. Sweat bubbles up on his forehead. His fears and furies are giving way to the Elite’s threats.

“NO! You were born for the Elite!”

“No, Bodzinski, and you weren’t either,” says Christy.

Memory’s eyes grow huge at Christy’s calm expression and sudden change of personality. The night before she was a wreckage of worries, now she is serene. Even Christians have to be reminded of whom to rest in. It is as if Christy has been saved all over again.

Bodzinski’s eyes flicker with disbelief, but somewhere in his memories he knows what she says is true and his heart softens.

“What, Christy, what do you want me to do? To recant and deny everything I have ever been raised up in? Do you actually expect me to renounce all I’ve ever been taught?” he snarls.

“I want you to know you don’t have to live in your father’s sin or in your own. You can be free,” she states.

Every memory of violence beckons him to act out on his fire-hot fury. A ghostly face of placid strength floats up from his memories, pulling his fists down and tugging at his heart. His knuckles release their anguish.

“Free like you?” He hopes to hit her hard with this denying remark.

She steps up to the glass door of her cell, her paranormal red eyes staring through him.

“I am freer now than I have ever been. Maybe not physically, but spiritually, yes, free like me.”

Bodzinski glares at her and then turns, walking away.

“Expect stage three to be unbearable,” bellows Bodzinski before closing the doors.

“He’s being a tad bit childish, don’t you think?” Ghost smirks.

“He’s got a lot of baggage,” adds Memory.

“More than you could understand,” replies Christy.

“Oh, c’mon, it’s not like he’s locked up like an animal and forced to become a zombie-like assassin,” comments Efrum.

“Yeah, really!” Surge spouts. “And it’s not like he was stolen from his hood and betrayed by his homies.”

“Like you have baggage, Surge!?” Ramsey snaps. “You want to become a weapon, so what’s your issue?”

His auburn eyes beat on her.

“Yeah, so what? It doesn’t mean I don’t have baggage,” he spits back.
