Chapter Thirteen
Juliette had tried her best to stop shaking but the anxiety would not leave her. Every time there was the sound of footsteps she practically threw herself from her chair as though preparing to run, but every time, the footsteps simply moved past the study and along the hallway.
She still could not believe that her stepbrother had drawn up in his carriage. It had brought everything back to her in one, terrifying moment and she had simply crumpled in front of Lord Morton.
He would have to know everything now and she could not tell how he would react. Her eyes burned with tears of shame and humiliation, dreading that he would simply return her to her stepbrother for being so untruthful. After all, she knew that Perrin could be rather convincing in his manner and conversation, giving the appearance of a jovial gentleman with no anger or malice at all in his character.
Of course, she knew just how well he could hide that part of him. When they had been home together, he had turned into a monster that she had no choice but to run from. He wanted to force her to do as he thought best, wanted to force himself on her when she would not do as he bade her. Juliette shuddered, wrapping her arms around her waist. She was not to be bought and sold like a piece of meat, given as a bride to whichever gentleman was willing to donate a hefty financial gift to her brother for the trouble. A gentleman she was quite sure would be just as cruel as her stepbrother.
The sound of voices from outside caught her attention. On legs that did not quite feel as though they would hold her up, she made her way to the window and looked out carefully, making sure to hide as best as she could.
Her stepbrother was getting into the carriage.
She sagged against the wall in sheer relief, her hand at her heart. Lord Morton had done as he had said—he had sent Perrin away.
And then, just as he was about to climb in, her stepbrother looked up and fixed his gaze on her.
Shrinking back behind the curtain, Juliette tried to make herself as small as possible, telling herself that he had not seen her. He had not seen her standing there, watching him leave. She had been careful to hide herself, had she not? Surely he could not…
Her trembling intensified. Her hand at her mouth, she sank to the floor, her back against the wall and knees pressed up against her chest. She did not even check that her ankles were covered, such was her fright. Her hands at her mouth, she drew in ragged breaths, trying not to give in to the panic that swirled through her. Had he seen her? If he had, that meant that she was no longer safe here. He would not leave this place until he had her in his carriage, taken back to London so that she could be forced into doing his bidding.
