Four hours later, with his official duties over, he was back in his room, changing out of his dark-blue blazer and white trousers. In a green linen shirt and tan chinos, he set off for the block in which the Yonans lived. In his pocket was one of the complimentary envelopes from the room in his hotel, sealed and sporting Yonan’s name and address. Inside was a promotional leaflet from a Chinese restaurant. All meaningless and untraceable but offering a credible excuse for him attempting to deliver it, if stopped.

The taxi dropped him at an exhibition centre next to a park shaded by dark, spreading Ficus trees. He had no idea whether he would be ten minutes or an hour, so he made a note of the taxi company’s details and set forth in the overpowering heat. His prosthetic limbs didn’t really cause him a problem if he could walk at his own pace and stop when he wanted. They did, however, remind him of the old days when he could run anywhere and climb anything.

When he was two streets away, he approached a beige concrete block of apartments with dark-brown glass in the windows. He stood in the shade on the opposite side of the street and took out the free map from his hotel room. Always look like you’re doing something, even if it’s scrolling through your phone contacts, his CIA trainers had taught him. Never stand around aimlessly looking at nothing in particular.

It wasn’t a surprise that no one was walking in this heat and that the traffic in the middle of the day was light.

He approached the block and walked into the cool of the hallway. The lift door was open, and he made his way to the fifth floor. He had only seen one camera inside the entrance. He made his way to apartment 503 and stood outside for a moment. He pressed the doorbell.

A short woman in a headscarf answered the door.

“I’m a friend of Habib Murchison,” Chris said.
