I still can’t believe all of this is happening. Yesterday Matteo gave me Arianna…she’s my newest possession, and I’ve obsessed over nothing else since learning of her presence. I’m supposed to be happy for Sofia and celebrate the life growing inside her, yet I couldn’t bring myself to acknowledge her pregnancy yesterday. I promised Matty I would, and I always hold true to my word, but yesterday, I needed my space to attempt to wrap my head around everything. If I hadn’t taken the time, I may’ve done something I’d regret later. Hearing of Giuseppe wanting to hurt Ari so badly and how he already has had my blood boiling. While I may not be head of the famiglia, I’m still a Vendetti, and I have access to all of our connections. I could’ve had that entire famiglia in Italy wiped out. I didn’t, but I could’ve.

Being in the Mafia, I know life is different than for others, and surprises happen. However, I wasn’t expecting any of it to have to do with me. If Matteo had told me this was all Dante, kidnapping a woman and getting another pregnant, then I wouldn’t be so dumbfounded, or even Valentino, but not me. I’m the one brother who’s attempted to do everything I can by the book. I’ve gone to church regularly—since I was a child—and I was a virgin when I married. You name it, and I thought I followed along appropriately. Apparently not, as life has a not so amusing way of shaking things up. But, as mio fratello mentioned, I’m mafioso, and this is life.

“Cris?” Sofia’s throaty morning tenor whispers my name. I’m lying in bed next to her, having slept very few hours with everything on constant repeat in my mind. I made a vow to this woman, yet I’ve broken it by not cherishing or loving her. I wasn’t the first, however. She was. If that even matters. None of it is justified, I suppose, but this is my life, so there’s not much I can do about any of it at this point. I’ve tried.

I’m supposed to be a dutiful marito to her and then go off to play with my toy when I have free time like any other made man. That person isn’t me. It has never been, and it has me spinning. My brothers could do it without skipping a beat. Somehow I have to figure out how to be more like them in this instance. I have to learn to disregard the woman I’ve pledged my allegiance to and reopen my heart to the woman I’d loved as a child. How can either of them compare or coexist in my mind without me tangling the relationships up together?

“Si, moglie?” I eventually offer a reply after she lies quietly, peering up at me. “Have something to tell me?”

She holds onto my bicep as if it will give her strength somehow. I would always protect her from another threat; it’s my duty as her marito.
