Chapter Sixteen

One positive aspect of being hidden away was that Caroline didn’t have to worry so much about proper decorum. She could, for once, be totally alone with her thoughts if she so pleased. After a rather unladylike sprint down to the shore, she lifted her skirts and flounced down on her back onto the grass. The previous night’s storm had blown away any errant clouds and now the sky was a bright, clear blue. With a gentle motion, she flicked away a ladybug that began meandering across her hair and onto her face. It was peaceful here, at least, she thought as she closed her eyes and let the sun warm her cool skin.

After a while, she was roused from her nap by the inkling of someone nearby. Caroline’s eyes flew open and she saw Luke standing above her.

He smiled down at her and said, “This banishment isn’t all bad now, is it?”

She rolled her eyes at his dramatic joke and then reached both hands up for him to take. He did and started to pull her up, but instead she gave a sharp tug and pulled him onto the grass beside her. With exaggerated movements, he tumbled down beside her and propped himself up on one elbow to gaze down at her.

Faking a casual air, Caroline asked, “Where did you and Lord Chase go off to this morn? Sophie said she saw the two of you ride off.”

“Oh, we were just gathering information on possible large game in the area. We believe there are deer and perhaps moose.” He replied, in a similar airy fashion.

“You didn’t mention anything about last night, did you?”

Luke’s face crumpled and his mouth twisted into a scowl. “Of course not, Caroline. What happens between us is hardly the concern of anyone else. Why would you ask such a thing?”

As she gazed up at the clear sky, Caroline exhaled the breath she was holding in and replied, “I apologize, Luke. Everything seems so odd. I’m simply bewildered.”

He leaned over her and stroked the side of her face with his free hand. “It’s all right, Caroline. I shouldn’t have been cross with you. Perhaps I can come to your chambers this evening and we can discuss this?”

Caroline nodded, and he stood and headed for the house. She remained where she was and continued to stare at the heavens.
