Chapter Twenty-Two: Visit from a Ghost

2 SEPTEMBER 2012

Essexville, Michigan

Charon stared out at Saginaw Bay as he reflected on his vampire life to this point. In less than a year since Styx transformed him, he had created his empire and set out to become the perfect fiend of a vampire that Styx had imagined would torment the Council, or at least defy their laws at every turn.

Charon lived that life to perfection. He acquired what he wanted, when he wanted, and kept most of it in the most amazing underground palace ever constructed. Louis XIV and his Versailles Palace paled in comparison. Charon staffed it with a throng of gorgeous young men, all content and happy with their lives despite the permanent imprisonment. He tormented people when the spirit moved him, kicked back and enjoyed the company of whomever he chose for a night, and otherwise answered to no one. He could travel to wherever he chose. And would never have to obey a soul.

Charon thanked the vampire gods that he could wake early enough to go out with dusk still lingering, to allow him a brief glimpse at the sun’s last beams before it went down for the night.

So why this nagging concern in this head for an old friend? He had left behind all the other humans from his previous life without regret. He thought of them rarely and seldom even wondered what became of them. Of course, because of the way he insulated himself and lived a solitary life, even as a human, not many people knew he’d vanished. Still, his small group of friends from college and a random person here and there must have pondered and even worried about what became of Charon, who simply disappeared into thin air one day.

He googled his real name one day, but Blade Haden came up with few results, all of them old entries, stories, or addresses from his time in college. So no one had informed the police, most probably believing he went off to do his own thing as he had a thousand times before. Nothing unusual there.

He converted to vampirism without a hitch. Perfect.

So why did the murky water reflect his image back to him and send him into this moment of reflection? Was he going soft, already? Why the last two weeks of preparation, for tonight?

That forced him to chuckle aloud. No. Nothing else hinted of such a calamity. Just this concern for Bill. He’d woke a couple of weeks ago and remembered his friend the night of his capture, as they hopped from club to club and Bill had attempted a heart-to-heart conversation with Charon. Charon had rebuffed it. Thought it the ravings of a man regretting his past because of his Christian upbringing and thinking too hard about his future. Still, few people in Charon’s past, going all the way back to his childhood and continuing from one foster family to the next ever showed any lasting concern for him.
