Chapter 8 – Walking on Water

I had agreed to meet J on the quiet side of Fisherman’s Wharf, away from the hustle and bustle of the tourists. Walking along the pier, I had wandered out to the edge of the water so I could watch the lights and be alone with my thoughts. I glanced at my phone to check the time again. I was an hour early for our dinner. I glanced across the bay and saw the lights from Alcatraz and Angel Island. Sausalito was in the distance as well, but it looked closer.

Blick, G, Ra, and my mother were meeting at my mother’s house in Sausalito for dinner. Blick had instructed the bodyguards to go with Lynn to work at the Golden Skull, and Grace decided she’d tag along. I had to save J, and they were all going on with their lives.

“If we all show up, he’ll suspect something is up,” Blick argued. “He figured the dog trick out rather fast. Don’t you think?”

He was right. I didn’t realize it at the time, but J probably did know G and Blick were there with me. Accompanying me again wouldn’t work. I knew it. I had to go alone. And I had to come up with a better plan than I had been given.

Two Ziploc bags of blood were strapped to the inside of my thighs. When the opportunity presented itself, I had been told to force the blood down J’s throat. I had been put in a dress like I was some china doll. I felt ridiculous. I stared down at my pink tennis shoes. At least I got to pick my shoes, I thought. The pink and white polka dots were just adorable, as Lynn had put it. The dress had been her and Grace’s idea. “Dressing up will confuse him. It’ll give you an edge,” Grace had offered. Maybe she was right. I didn’t know, but I was surprised how excited they had been about the plan.

Also, I was thankful that everything was finally out in the open. I don’t think they were as amazed about Blick’s confession as I was. They thought it was cool. I was dating a god, as old as dirt. It was funny in a way. I still couldn’t believe it. But, as I realized, it did explain a lot. Blick and Ra were both Ancient gods and had been on the Council until Typhean’s power of persuasion had convinced the other members to kick them out. They had gone into hiding. G had allowed Blick to assume a new identity and join ranks with him. Ra had sought exile in the depths of the ocean in his animal form of a dragon.

The name I knew him by, ‘Blick,’ was a nickname for his celestial deity label, which couldn’t be spoken, not anymore since neither he, nor Ra, didn’t really have worshippers.
