The next time I had an episode, it came as randomly as ever and wasn’t related to any event or circumstance. That’s why it didn’t make sense to me when psychologists talked about the psychological aspects of post-natal depression and dismissed my belief that it was hormonal. You know your own body – and if there was any time and place that depression was going to come through the door, it was through the door of that hospital.

It’s a strange irony that when Matthew was born, he was a healthy, bouncing baby of 8lbs and I was plunged into a deep, dark depression, whereas when Louis was born, he was a terribly, terribly sick baby and yet I wasn’t plunged into that same blackness. I was emotionally traumatised by what was happening to my son, but I didn’t get clinical depression while he was in the hospital or in special care.

Considering everything that went on in those first few weeks of Louis’s life, I can’t believe how calm I was throughout it all. Something kicked in – a coping mechanism – and it kicked in again when Louis was twenty months old and we came within an hour of losing him due to adhesions caused by the operation he’d had at six weeks.

I had brought on my illness many times by thinking, ‘Wouldn’t it be awful if I got ill?’ but neither time Louis was ill did it come. Yes, I continued to have episodes of depression, but only in the same way as I had for the previous twelve years.
