CHAPTER NINE

Kissing in the Park

I rode around on my motorcycle for a while after I left Aggie’s, aimlessly turning down random streets. A few hours later, I ended up at Admiral Park. I parked my bike and wandered toward an empty bench facing the playground to sit and clear my head. Riding around certainly hadn’t helped. Earlier, I had found myself parked outside the hospital, watching from afar as news anchors stood outside covering whatever minute details they could siphon about Nolan’s current condition.

I pictured how weak and exhausted Nolan must have looked in court today. I overheard one anchor telling, in exaggerated detail, how Nolan had collapsed as the judge entered the room and how silent the room had been as his head slammed against the stone floor. In the last eight months I had watched Nolan deteriorate into a worn, broken shadow of what once was my best friend. If they convicted him, he would face a life sentence. The way things were looking if they did convict him, he wouldn’t make it very long, either from sickness or another stabbing.

If he was acquitted, there were still plenty of people around town that saw him as a murderer and a rapist. Despite the jury’s decision, they would not be swayed otherwise.

Just sitting in the park now, I listened to the idle chit-chat between the parents as they watched their children playing, unaware of my presence.

“I hope that scumbag doesn’t wake up. Will certainly save some tax dollars.”

“You know they were saying he has a history of violence. I’d always thought he was a nice guy, but I guess you never know about people, do you? I can’t believe I let my son learn soccer from him.”

“What about the boyfriend? Did you see him in court with that redhead? Seemed a bit suspicious and disrespectful if you ask me.”

Yes, people had already drawn their conclusions. The only way to change their minds would be to find out who really did it. It hadn’t seemed like a random act of violence. Whoever killed Claire had seen her and Nolan together and had waited for her to leave the pub that night. They made sure it looked like Nolan did it. Something told me it had to do with Claire’s past. She must have been hiding for a reason and I had to find out what that reason was.

I settled myself on finding out. There was little else I could find out on my own, but I knew of a few private investigators downtown. Every now and then they sent their assistants to search our archives at the library. Maybe one of them would be able to dig further into this. I still had savings left from financial aid and what my parents had sent me when I was forced on leave. Hopefully it would be enough.

I felt some relief with my decision. I knew bringing what I found to the police would be pointless. Nobody wanted to hear there was more to this story.
