CHAPTER 17

ABOVE THE GULF OF THAILAND

MEE NOI GLANCED at the seat in the rear of the cabin where the boy sat with the baby, staring back at him, eyes narrow and angry.

Impressive, Mee Noi thought, though he was sure beneath the mask of defiance the kid was terrified.

Turning back to Chayan, Mee Noi said, “When the monk comes for them, he won’t be alone.”

“If we cannot handle a few hired thugs, then we are the ones who should suffer.”

If Pravat had not been lying, and the monk’s friends had picked off Chayan’s men, then it would be more than hired thugs they’d have to deal with. Angry parents could be so unpredictable. While Mee Noi was confident their men could deal with the problem, there was something they could do to improve the odds.

“Do you think Krung Thep is the best place to confront him?” Mee Noi asked. Krung Thep was what the Thais called Bangkok, the plane’s destination. Though the capital would provide Chayan and Mee Noi with many resources, it would also do the same for the monk and his friends.

“You have a better plan?”

“Perhaps,” Mee Noi said. “I was thinking we could arrange for one of our vans to meet us at Suvarnabhumi. When we arrive, we will make it look as if our guests have gotten off. I will also get off and lure the monk into a trap, then join you as soon as he’s taken the bait.”

Chayan raised an eyebrow. “Where will I and the brats be while you’re doing all this?”

“If I’m not mistaken, we have recently come into possession of some suitably comfortable accommodations outside the country.”

For the first time since Mee Noi started describing his plan, Chayan smiled.

GARRETT MAY HAVE appeared angry when the man looked back at him, but in truth he was assessing his captors. The more information he gathered, the better his chances of keeping Claire from harm.

He watched as the men talked. Though he couldn’t understand what they were saying, he was able to learn more about the two men’s relationship. Such as the way Mr. Smile always spoke to the boss with a deferential tone, like he was constantly trying to please the man. As for the boss himself, he gave off a sense he was superior to everyone else, not just in the job but in everything.

Claire stirred, but didn’t wake. When she settled back down again, he looked out the window at the night, and wondered what his mother would be looking for if she were here.

“Knowing your opponent’s weaknesses is always your greatest strength,” she had once told him. She’d been training him in some self-defense moves, and had shown him exactly what she meant. The bruises from that lesson lasted for several days.

All right, had either man revealed a weakness?

They were both probably around fifty. Mr. Smile was smaller than his boss, and older. He wore glasses, so maybe that was something Garrett could use. Other than that, Garrett couldn’t see anything else.
