CHAPTER NINE

THE NEXT DAY, Lauren woke late, and decided to go shopping for something naughty to wear for Alex when they made love again tomorrow. Something really sexy. In the lingerie store, she bought a peach-colored slip of a thing, with scalloped lace on the plunging neckline and hem, some sinfully sexy-smelling lotion and massage oil that claimed its formula came from a harem.

She was on her way home when she heard the siren behind her and pulled off the road. Alex’s truck sped by her down the street.

On impulse, she followed it, thinking of the time she’d watched him lay the foam blanket. There was something about the bravery, the heroism of his job that excited her. Aroused her.

Just what you need, she thought, but followed the rig anyway, to a small side street. Orange flames burst from a two-story Victorian house. She parked across the street as Alex bounded out of the truck. Two other trucks arrived within minutes. Alex had told her a one-alarm blaze called in one company, a two-alarm was two companies, etc., depending on the seriousness of the fire. He’d also explained to her that many times he, as senior captain, conducted Incident Command—directing the operation—while other times he went inside. There was an official vehicle at the scene, and she watched as Alex approached the white-shirted guy, the battalion chief. Alex donned his gear as they talked. Turnout coat. Air-pack. Helmet. A face mask dangled from his hand. He held an ax, which she knew from her research for the cookies, was called a halligan. She’d paint him now as “America’s Bravest.”

In minutes, he was across the narrow porch and at the door of the house, behind guys going in with a huge hose. Then he disappeared inside.

Her heart catapulted with admiration and awe. And with worry.
