Jerry did better than he promised.

Two days later, in the early evening, Jerry delivered the cash to Steven's house personally. Ten neat packets of used one hundred dollar bills. Each packet tightly bound with a $10,000 mustard-yellow currency strap. Jerry made no last minute attempt to talk sense to his client. After Steven signed both a receipt and a waiver, the accountant promptly transferred the packets of cash from his briefcase to Steven's coffee table. Very professional, and a bit cold. When Steven and Jerry shook goodbye at the front door, there was a frozen instant of eye contact. A flash of deep concern in Jerry's gaze, quickly pushed aside by a forced smile and a friendly slap on Steven's shoulder.

Then Jerry was gone.

Steven stashed the cash in the kitchen cabinet where his pots and pans were stored. Not a particularly clever hiding spot, but Steven felt little need to hide the money at all. He did it because it felt weird to leave one hundred thousand dollars atop a coffee table, or dumped in a sock drawer. The kitchen cabinet was a compromise to satisfy that buzz of paranoia that always came with the possession of an enormous sum of cash.

Not wanting to waste any time, that same evening Steven jumped into his pickup truck and drove to the intersection of Pine and North. The reward flyer that he'd taped to the north-east corner lamp post more than a week ago was noticeably weathered but still there. In the amber wash of street light, the faded photograph of Luna's smiling face took on a spectral quality. A haunting reminder that with each passing day his little girl became more and more just a memory. Life moved on without her... but not for him. Not yet.

Steven ripped away all four corners of the flyer to make certain the stranger got the message.

He was ready.
