TWELVE

THURSDAY

Annie awoke the next morning with the taste of the sea still on her lips. She showered quickly and pulled on some trousers and a jumper, grabbing spoonfuls of cereal as she moved around her tiny office-cum-flat. They’d stayed late at Paradise Grove, talking to all the staff, and then again to the friends of Nicole, waiting for the tide to recede. The search party had returned empty handed. There had been no sign of Nicole anywhere along the coast, and they’d searched down to Market Harpleigh and up to the village in the other direction, too. This morning they would be moving inland, but Annie could tell in the leading officer’s voice that, as the hours passed, so did their chances of finding Nicole alive, or finding her at all.

Annie had popped into Pete’s Pizza after Swift had dropped her at the door, Swift himself had cried off stopping with excuses to get home. She’d ordered a large, deep-pan veggie pizza with extra mushrooms and divulged as much as she could to Pete across the counter as he’d made her dinner from scratch. Pushing open the window to let out the smell of last night’s dinner, consumed on her little camp bed watching reruns of Schitt’s Creek, sounds from the street below filtered into her flat as the day started with the deliveries to the businesses that lined the cobbled street below. Annie knew that she should move, ideally into a proper flat, and not one patched together from scraps of a now unused office space. But Annie loved her flat, it was hers, and she loved having Pete the pizza man downstairs, and being in the centre of the city. Her mum had told her, the last time they spoke, that she wasn’t doing herself any favours in the romance department living in an office, but Annie wasn’t in any hurry to repeat her failed attempts at a love life.

With that in mind, Annie glugged the last of her tea, hoping to quash some of the guilt of not having spoken to her mum in months. They’d only talked once since Annie had returned home from the Yorkshire Dales with Swift, and not at all since getting in touch with Mim. There was a time and a place to tell her mum that she was back in contact with her little sister, and over text was not it.

The sun was out as Annie locked her front door and headed off down the cobbled street to the police station. It was only a short walk, but Annie often used the time to figure out the plot of her latest case out in her head. This morning she was trying to work out the logistics of someone abducting Nicole in the time between her finding the dead man, and the police arriving. There was a certain amount of cockiness in the abduction, a confidence that, whoever it was who took Nicole, could do so unseen by the arriving police and her friends, not to mention the staff who were always present.
