Who knew two weeks of being grounded would fly by so fast. I told myself once I had my car back, the only thing missing from my life was the weekly, sometimes daily, hip-hop classes I took when I wasn’t working and had some free time to myself. It’d been months since I’d taken a formal dance class. One, because I couldn’t afford it until now, and two, I had no idea which schools would be any good around here. Call me arrogant, but I had a tough time believing anyone in Portland could come close to the talent I saw back home at my last dance studio.

Dancers from Chicago brought so much energy to moves and made even the simplest detail the dopest part of a routine. You could even tell by the way someone walked if they even had the finesse to call themselves a dancer. Homesick didn’t cover how much I missed dancing with my friends.

With the money I saved up from my part-time gig, my life was beginning to align with some sort of normalcy. I had friends, or rather, a friend. Check. I had a job, check, and now I’d be able to channel some of this recent frustration into an hour-long class of advanced hip hop. Level four, the flyer said. We’ll have to see about that.
