FLYING CLOSE TO THE ocean’s surface, the view from the Blackhawk was spectacular. In the distance, kilometre upon kilometre of empty beach slid by. Gently clasping his M-4 between his legs, muzzle resting on the floor, Craig allowed his eyes to take in the clear, blue sky. High above them, he caught a brief glimpse of a flock of birds in close formation heading towards land. Nearby were some marines. Tanya sat beside him, dozing, her head rested back, occasionally rolling from side to side as the chopper changed direction or hit pockets of turbulence. She was a beautiful woman, with soft, smooth skin and although she was fit, she still carried a womanly figure. Often he caught himself checking her out if she was walking in front of him. Only once she caught him in the act, but she just smiled and winked.

Movement captured his attention and Craig leaned forward in his seat so he could better focus. The dark blots were flying high and fast, but they were undoubtedly fighter jets. They banked together and changed direction, disappearing over the land within seconds. As Craig drifted away into his thoughts, he noticed a British destroyer in the near distance. The ship was cutting slowly through the ocean, heading north. Moments later, Craig spotted another destroyer, followed by two missile frigates, and a smaller ship he assumed was possibly an anti-submarine ship. The ships formed part of a British carrier strike group, he realised. Feeling the seat belts digging into shoulders, he watched as the sky disappeared to be replaced with ocean as the Blackhawk banked hard. Looking through the front windscreen, he saw they were approaching the HMS Illustrious. Reducing speed and descending, it was only a matter of minutes before they were touching down upon the aircraft carrier’s deck.

As the Blackhawk’s engines shut down, their powerful whine was replaced by an incessant noise. Two Chinooks and an Apache were outbound towards the coast, whilst three RAF F-35B fighter-bombers were patiently waiting for the choppers to depart a safe distance from the ship. Craig climbed out onto the ship’s deck and turned to help Tanya, but she ignored him. Jumping clear of the Blackhawk she stood beside him, wisely leaving her hearing protection pushed into her ear cavities.

Flight line ground crew had signalled for the Blackhawk’s aircrew and passengers to remain where they stood. A dull, powerful thud reverberated across the aircraft carrier’s deck and the first F-35 was catapulted airborne, afterburners glowing red. The remaining two closely followed the first and within moments they were a trio of black dots streaking towards the coastline. With the all clear given, the small group walked swiftly across the deck towards a waiting British officer.

He welcomed them with a smile and nod, although as several helicopters began start up procedures nearby, didn’t speak until they were below decks. The group spent nearly an hour and a half in a briefing room being familiarised with the carrier, locations of toilets, meal
