51.

I'm glad this is the last day. After hours of sleepy screen staring and radio listening, my brain is about ready to fitz out. All day, I've heard nothing but location coordinates, delivery times, orders, call-ins, and courier lingo. Doesn't Mel get tired of hearing all this spew? I guess it wouldn't matter if someone was reading him a dictionary; if it's making him money, Mel will listen to every phonetic and Latin root. Then, at 1:50, another random call comes in. It's Spock's voice.

"Send your best courier to us. We got something for her."

"Fine. I got something for you, too."

One minute later, Ho bursts in, breathing heavily.

"Last run of my last day," she gasps. "So I'm really busting it out."

"Okay," I say, taking the package. "But he says Chen is sending something back. So that will be even more important to us than this."

Ho's face twists. "Why do you think Chen would send stock info back?"

"It's not stock info," I say, grabbing my sticky razor. "Chen has only got one reason to contact Mel, and that's to talk about their arrangement."

I go through my ritual of slicing, opening, inserting, key punching, re-enclosing, and resealing. I hand the package back to Ho.

"Haul ass," I say.

"You got it," she says, and turns her back.

I hop back on my keyboard and call up the second encryption key. I run it through, get Invest all of it in Teen Spirit. All of it!

I page through my list of code names to find out what Teen Spirit signifies. Let's see, Litter Box means Ralston-Purina, Dead Arabs means General Electric. Radiation Cancer I think is something like MacDonnell Douglas. So Teen Spirit must be--

Some backseated part of my mind realizes I never heard the door slam.

I turn and find Ho staring at me. Our eyes meet. Neither of us moves.

Drip, drip, drip goes the leaky pipe

Finally, she whispers, "What are you thinking about?"

"Sh."

I let my eyes leave hers and run along her torso. She does not move, and yet under the touch of my eyes her entire body slowly transforms. Athletic muscle becomes voluptuous flesh.

I bring my eyes back to her's. She does not blink.

Scratchy voices emit from my ham radio.

"Yeah?"

"Mel, it's me, Spock. Did you send the package?"

"Yeah. Ain't she there yet?"

"No, she ain't."

"Dammit! Call me when she arrives."

Ho smiles at me. Her downy hair flutters like a floating cotton seed after it landed in my breakfast of mashed blueberries. "I got to go."

I nod.

She slowly walks backwards until her shoulder strikes the door. She opens it and steps outside, smiling at me one more time.

The door shuts.
