Tyler reached across the table, placed his hand over mine, looked into my eyes and said, “Brie, you look absolutely radiant tonight. Do you have any idea how much I love you?”

I could see my reflection in his dark, sexy eyes, and the sincere look on his face made me want to reach across the table and give him a deep passionate kiss. Instead, I took his hand, kissed it softly and held it to my cheek.

“I love you too, Tyler Mason. You really are the best thing that ever happened to me.”

Tyler glanced around the crowded restaurant, leaned forward and whispered, “I know,” and burst out in laughter.

I slapped his hand away. “Why do you have to be an ass at such a romantic moment?”

“Oh, come on, Brie. You know I’m kidding. We’ve been together for five years; you know how I feel about you.”

I stretched my left hand across the table, wiggled my fingers and mockingly sang the lyrics from that really bad Beyoncé tune, “If you liked it, then you should have put a ring on it.”

Tyler rolled his eyes and was about to reply when the waiter arrived with the check.

“Mademoiselle et Monsieur, I ‘ope that the food and service was to your liking?” he said in a heavy French accent.

“You’ve been wonderful, Marcel. Thank you for making this a memorable evening.” Tyler replied.

“Is there anyzing else I can get you or ze young lady?”

“No, I think we are done,” replied Tyler, placing his hand over the receipt.

The waiter bowed. “Bien.”

“Mercy beaucoup, Marcel,” Tyler said, using the only two words of French he knew, and reached inside the front of his blazer.

“I had a great time, Babe,” I said. “Thank you for taking me to this fancy place.”

“Nothing’s too good for my girl,” he replied, in a poor imitation of Humphrey Bogart. He reached down to pat his back pockets and gave me a bewildered look.

“Is everything okay?” I asked.

“Yeah, it’s fine. I just need to run out to the car for a minute. I’ll be right back.”

“You don’t look fine.”

“I think I left my wallet in the glove compartment. I’ll be right back,” he said, pushed his chair away from the table, got up and walked briskly toward the exit.

When Tyler had told me two weeks earlier that he had something special planned for Valentine’s Day, I had no idea he was taking me to Chez Charles for dinner. The evening had been wonderful so far, but I couldn’t help but feel disappointed that there was no marriage proposal. I had convinced myself that tonight would be the night, but now I was left wondering if Tyler would ever propose.

During the last five years of us living together, the subject had come up in numerous conversations and Tyler’s response had always been, “What’s the big rush? When the time is right we’ll get married. Nothing is going to change. I ain’t going anywhere, Babe.
