Stillwater looked afraid. I thought he might piss himself he was so afraid. “H-Hope?” he said in a screeching voice. “Hope Ross?”

“Don’t do that,” I said. “Don’t play games with me. You had to know I was coming for you. After everything you did—”

“I did shit,” he said, and suddenly there was a fire in his expression, anger simmering in him. “You ruined me, you bitch.”

“You deserved it,” I said. I pressed the knife into his skin, not hard enough to make it break or bleed, but hard enough to hurt.

He coughed.

“Tell me about my mother,” I said. “Tell me about Coretta.”

His eyes widened. “What?”

“Start talking,” I growled, and I pressed the knife down for a second before I released it.

He cried out. “Shit!”

“Talk,” I ordered.

“I can’t think with that thing at my neck,” he said.

I pulled it back. I wrapped my other hand around the handle and held it over him, as if I was going to plunge it right into his heart.

“Shit,” he said again. This time it was a whimper.

“My mother,” I said.

“What about her?” he said.

“You dated her in high school.”

“Yeah. So?”

“You never said anything to me about that,” I said.

“That something you would have wanted to know?”

I considered. “You abducted Deanna Maxwell.”

“No,” he said. “No, I never touched that girl. I swear to God.”

“You knocked me out and said things to me while I was at my father’s grave.”

“No.” The fire in his expression again.

“Don’t lie to me.” I brought the tip of the knife down, poking his shirt, cutting a tiny, tiny hole in the fabric.

“You’re batshit insane,” he said, his voice wavering. “Just like your damned mother.”

I pulled the knife back. “What the hell does that mean?”

“I thought it was sexy with Colleen,” he said. “For a while, anyway. Then she just got weird. And the other thing was that I was never sure if she even was Colleen. Half the time, it was Coretta, and she’d say she was Colleen or Colleen would say she was Coretta. Your whole damned family is my fucking downfall.”

“What’s that mean?” I said. “Did my mother…” I swallowed. “Did my mother help you kill Ella and Nancy and Gwen?”

“I didn’t kill them,” he said. “You made it all up, you bitch, so why are you still saying—”

“What about my mother?”

“I don’t know what fuckall your mother did,” he said. “Or her sister. Your aunt, I guess. Whatever the hell it was that they did. Shit, Suzanne was so messed up that she was begging someone to kill her.” He shook his head.

I scrambled off of him, taking the knife with me. “What do you know about Suzanne?”

“What do you know?” He scooted away from me, eyeing me warily.

“That you broke up with my mother for her,” I said. “Or maybe broke up with Coretta. I’m not sure which. And then someone killed Suzanne. Either Coretta or Colleen. But that it got covered up. Made to look like a car accident.”

“She said it was a car accident,” said Stillwater, shuddering.
