In “No Fat,” Debra has a hard time admitting why her parents are going away for Thanksgiving. There’re a lot of relatively unimportant details that go on too long and could be tedious, but when it’s done in dialogue, it’s more about the emotional dynamic between the couple than simply information. And it’s funny, always a bonus.
RAY How come your parents backed out?
DEBRA They’re going to be out of the country.
RAY What? Who leaves America on Thanksgiving? That’s pretty … unthankful.
DEBRA Don’t be so judgmental. They like to travel and see the world. Just because your parents never go farther than … here.
RAY So, where are they goin’?
DEBRA (very quietly)
They’re going to … overseas.
RAY What? What was that?
DEBRA Nothing. They’re going overseas.
RAY Tell me where.
DEBRA It’s not important. And you don’t need to make fun of them all the time.
RAY I won’t make fun of them. Where are they going for Thanksgiving?
A LONG PAUSE.
DEBRA Turkey.
