As she got back into the car she was still shaking. She’d hoped the bank cashier would have noticed and stopped the withdrawal, but she’d simply gone through the motions, peered at her ID and asked a couple of security questions. The envelope of cash looked pitifully small to think that was her life savings. Wes snatched the money from her and wasted no time spinning off. The ride back to the house seemed to take forever and, as she watched the driver nervously, she contemplated what she could do. She could grab him from behind, choke him maybe. But he was stronger than she was and what then, when he broke free? He would end her just like he’d told her he would. She was helpless.

Gavin smiled when Wes pushed Emily back through the living room door. He passed the money over to the main man. “Over ten big uns there, our kid.”

Phil gasped a sigh of relief, feeling sure this would have bought his release. Surely these idiots would go now, and he could go back to his normal life.

Gavin nodded. At last, the debt was paid. He stood up, looking like the cat who’d got the cream. “Nice doing business with you. Tell your sister thank you, too.”

Emily wanted to run at him and scratch his eyes out but knew better. She sat staring at the floor. The three men left the room and Phil was about to stand up when there was a commotion in the hallway. He ran over to Emily and hid behind her. “What the hell is happening now?”

Emily pushed Phil away from her with both hands. She looked around the room and grabbed a heavy metal ornament. There was no way she was taking this sitting down anymore. She would fight for her life if it came to it. Phil followed suit and took up the sweeping brush. Like that would do any damage. They listened to shouting, screaming, banging in the hallway. Neither of them dared move. Perhaps Wes had turned on Gavin hoping for a better cut? Finally, the living room door swung open, and she saw Gavin coming back into the room. But someone was behind him.

“John,” she gasped.

Gavin was pushed to the back wall as John pointed a gun at him. “You fucking move an inch and I’ll send you to meet your maker.”

Over Phil’s shoulder, Emily could see Wes laid on the hallway floor, not moving, blood trickling down his head. The other guy must have run off. Phil seemed to sense his chance, because he sprinted to the door and turned back quickly before he left. “I’m out of here. I never seen a thing.”

Emily ran to John and hugged him. “He took my money, made me go to the bank and draw it all out.”

“I’ve got your money here, love, don’t you worry about anything. You go outside and get in the car, I’ll be out in a minute after I’ve dealt with this wanker.”

Gavin stood with his back against the wall.
